2015 CampingWorld.com 500 Odds, Picks & Predictions: Kevin Harvick the 3/1 Favorite at Bovada: The 2015 Cup Series takes a break from the high speeds of intermediate ovals this weekend to make a trip to Phoenix International Raceway. The 1.0-mile oval is one of the flattest tracks on the schedule, and when you factor in the two different sets of corners at PIR, it is easy to understand why finding a comfortable setup can be tough for drivers and crew chiefs. Of course, some drivers have mastered Phoenix’s flat corners better than other, and with that in mind, here is a closer look at the drivers to watch in Sunday’s CampingWorld.com 500.
2015 CampingWorld.com 500 Odds, Picks & Predictions: The Favorites
Considering he has won a series-high six races at Phoenix, including three straight, Kevin Harvick is a no-brainer frontrunner this weekend. In addition to winning three straight races at the track, he has four wins in the last six races and has led a series-best 661 laps and compiled a series-leading 3.2 average finish during the same stretch. Harvick is the 3/1 favorite to win at Bovada Sportsbook.
He is a four-time winner at Phoenix, and Jimmie Johnson has been one of the most consistent frontrunners at the track. He has piled up 13 top-five finishes in his last 17 starts at PIR, and he has finished sixth or better in three of his last four starts. Johnson seems to be in contention for a win whenever the series visits Phoenix, and he has shown on multiple occasions that he can seal the deal.
Although he is still looking for his first win at Phoenix, Brad Keselowski has been one of the best drivers in the series at the track lately. Over the past three seasons, his 5.5 average finish in six races at PIR ranks second among all drivers, and he has finished fourth or better in three of his last four starts at the track. To top it off, Keselowski has finished in the top five in the last three March events at Phoenix.
2015 CampingWorld.com 500 Odds, Picks & Predictions: The Contenders
While the most recent of his two wins at Phoenix came in 2004, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been knocking on the door of another win at the track recently. He has compiled a 4.7 average finish in his last four starts at Phoenix, and he is the only driver in the series to have finished in the top 10 in each of the last four races at the track.
His luck has been horrible so far this season, but Jeff Gordon has enjoyed a lot of success at Phoenix in the past. He has won multiple races at the track with his most recent win coming in 2011. Meanwhile, Gordon was one of the strongest drivers at the track last season, finishing fifth in the March race and second in the fall event.
He is one of the best flat track drivers in the series, and not surprisingly, Denny Hamlin has been strong at Phoenix throughout his career. He has finished sixth or better in 10 of his 19 starts at PIR, including four times in his last six starts. In fact, Hamlin has three top-three finishes at Phoenix since 2012, including a win.
It seems like only a matter of time before Joey Logano is celebrating a victory at Phoenix. After all, he has reeled off three straight top-10 finishes at the track, logging finishes of fourth and sixth in two starts last season. Perhaps more importantly, Logano’s 121 laps led in the last three races at Phoenix rank second in the series.
In the last 10 races at Phoenix, Ryan Newman’s 10.7 average finish ranks second in the series, and during the stretch, he has finished 11th or better seven times. More importantly, Newman has five top-five finishes over the same stretch, including a win.
