2014 Ford EcoBoost 300 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Favorites, Sleepers and Drivers to Avoid: The 2014 Nationwide Series will come to an end Saturday at Homestead, and while rookie Chase Elliott already made history by clinching the title last weekend at the age of 18, there is still one more race to decide. The event is a companion race with the Cup Series, but with guys like Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin focusing their attention on winning the Cup title, the number of drivers pulling double duty this weekend is somewhat limited. That being said, there are still several big names in the field, and here is a closer look at the drivers to watch this weekend.
The Favorites
Although he was robbed of a win last weekend by a questionable caution, Kyle Busch shouldn’t have to wait long to have another shot at a victory. After all, he has been excellent at Homestead in the Nationwide Series. In seven starts at the track, he has six finishes of third or better, including a pair of victories.
He is the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and after his shot at a Cup title ended last weekend, Brad Keselowski decided to add another Nationwide race to his schedule. He is actually riding a streak of three straight finishes of third or better at Homestead, and he has been to victory lane in each of his last two starts at the track.
After a three-year absence, Matt Kenseth logged a fourth-place finish in last year’s Nationwide race at Homestead. Overall, he has seven top-10s in nine starts, including four top-five finishes. Three of Kenseth’s top-five finishes have come in his last four starts, and during the stretch, he picked up a win at the track.
The Contenders
He has only made one start at Homestead, but Kyle Larson was one of the main contenders in his debut at the track last season. He ended up finishing second at Homestead last year, but with another year of experience and a couple of Nationwide wins under his belt, Larson should be an even better in his return trip to the rack Saturday.
After racing for points the last several weeks, Chase Elliott should be able to focus 100 percent on winning Saturday after clinching the Nationwide title last weekend. As the championship suggests, Elliott has been the steadiest series regular all year, and his three wins also lead all Nationwide drivers.
Although he has struggled with consistency at Homestead, there is no denying Regan Smith’s upside this weekend. After all, he put on a dominant performance in a win at the track in 2012. He also enters the race ranked second in the series in points and second with 25 top-10s. Smith could cap a solid year with another win at Homestead.
Sleeper Special
He will drive the Team Penske No. 12 in the season finale Saturday, and Ryan Blaney has been strong in just about every start he has made for Team Penske in 2014. In 13 starts, he has logged nine top-five finishes and 12 top-10s. More importantly, Blaney has finished fourth or better in each of his last six starts at Homestead.
Big Name to Avoid
He will make his final start with Joe Gibbs Racing this weekend, but based on his track record at Homestead, Elliott Sadler might not go out on a high note. He has a 17.0 average finish in five starts at the track, and he is still looking for his first top-five finish. Sadler finished 16th at Homestead last year while driving for JGR, and he seems unlikely to challenge for a win Saturday.
