2013 U.S. Cellular 250 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Breaking Down the Race: While the Cup Series will be at Pocono Raceway this weekend, the Nationwide Series returns to Iowa Speedway for a non-companion event. The track has been kind to the Nationwide drivers, and the last five races at Iowa have been won by series regulars. With just one Cup driver scheduled to pull double duty this weekend, there is a good chance the Nationwide drivers will be able to continue their stranglehold on victory lane at the short track.
Last summer, pole-sitter Elliott Sadler eventually got the better of the Justin Allgaier in battle that went back and forth throughout the race. Allgaier led a race-high 101 laps, but Sadler led 60 laps in his own right and was out front when it mattered most. Earlier this year, Austin Dillon saw a dominant performance go south in the closing laps. He led 207 of the 250 laps, but Trevor Bayne slipped by with less than 20 laps to go and went on to score the win.

The Favorite
Defending Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski is the only full-time Cup regular scheduled to pull double duty this weekend, and his experience and his success at NASCAR’s highest level alone gives him a leg up on the competition. Throw in the fact that he is also a former winner at Iowa and has finished fourth or better in all three of his starts at the short track, and it is safe to say that he is the man to beat this weekend,
The Other Contenders
While he didn’t win at Iowa earlier this year, Austin Dillon showed plenty of muscle. He led 207 of the 250 laps, but a late adjustment threw off the handling of the car just enough to cost him the victory. Dillon has climbed to the top of the Nationwide standings thanks a recent hot streak, and he will be extra motivated to get to victory lane this weekend after letting one slip away at the same track a few weeks ago.
He is the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and Elliott Sadler has known nothing but success at Iowa. He has finished in the top five in all five of his starts at the track, posting a 2.8 average finish. Sadler has also finished third or better in his last four starts at the track so he is basically a lock to be in the mix for the win this weekend.
Although his overall numbers at Iowa are a bit uneven, Trevor Bayne did go to victory lane when the series visited the track earlier this year. More importantly, Bayne’s victory came in his first start at the track since taking over the Roush Fenway Racing No. 6 car. Counting Bayne’s win, the No. 6 team has won four of the last five races at the track so the setup that team has is the real deal.
Despite being winless in the Nationwide Series in 2013, no series regular has been better at delivering elite finishes than Brian Vickers. His nine top-five finishes are two more than any other Nationwide regular, and his five top-three finishes are also the most of any series regular. Vickers got caught up in a wreck in the first race at Iowa this season, but he is running well enough to end up in victory lane when the series returns to the track this weekend.
Sleeper Special
While he is still looking for his first Nationwide Series win, rookie Kyle Larson has flashed his tremendous talent throughout the 2013 season. In fact, he already has one impressive performance at Iowa under his belt when he notched a top-five in his track debut earlier this year. The top-five run came during a stretch that has seen Larson finish in the top 15 in his last 11 starts, and as he continues to improve, a trip to victory lane seems inevitable sooner rather than later. With a somewhat weakened field, it could be as soon as this weekend.
Big Name to Avoid
The Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 team has made a series-leading eight trips to victory lane in 2013, but all of those wins came with Kyle Busch behind the wheel. This weekend, Drew Herring will be in the No. 54, and in four starts at Iowa, he has yet to crack the time. Bettors are used to counting on the No. 54 for a big payday, but it won’t happen this weekend with Herring at the helm.
