2013 Sylvania 300 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Jimmie Johnson the Vegas Favorite

2013-Sylvania-300-Odds-Free-Picks-and-Predictions2013 Sylvania 300 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Jimmie Johnson the Vegas Favorite: The Cup Series returns to New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend, but this time around, there is a lot more on the line. Sunday’s Sylvania 300 is the second race of the Chase, and the points are so close that 11 of the 13 championship contenders could leave New Hampshire with the point lead. Meanwhile, the added pressure and intensity will likely lead to some hard racing at a track where passing is already difficult thanks to the like of banking in the corners. Don’t be surprised if it takes a little bumping and banging to win Sunday.

Of course, Denny Hamlin didn’t need to move anyone out of his way in order to win at New Hampshire last September because nobody could keep up with him. Hamlin led 193 of the 300 laps and cruised to the win. Hamlin spoiled what was an otherwise banner afternoon for Hendrick Motorsports. Three HMS cars finished in the top five, runner-up Jimmie Johnson and third-place Jeff Gordon.

The Favorites

In 23 starts at New Hampshire, Jimmie Johnson has compiled a 9.4 average finish and has logged 16 top-10 finishes. In addition, to being one of the most consistent drivers at the track, he also knows how to seal the deal. Johnson has won three races at New Hampshire in his career, and he finished second at the track last fall and sixth earlier this year.

He is a three-time winner at New Hampshire, and Jeff Gordon has remained one of the most consistent drivers at the track throughout his career. In fact, his 8.8 average finish in the last 20 races at New Hampshire is the best in the series. During the stretch, Gordon has eight finishes of fourth or better, including four second-place runs. He is also riding a streak of 16 straight top-15s at the track so he is basically a lock to contend this weekend.

The Dark Horses

Although he is mired in the worst slump of his career, a trip to New Hampshire could be just what the doctor ordered for Denny Hamlin. After all, his 8.8 average finish at the track is the best among active drivers. He has only finished outside the top 15 in two of his 15 starts at New Hampshire, and he has finished sixth or better eight times. Hamlin is also the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and in his last eight starts at New Hampshire, he has five finishes of third or better.

He is going for the season sweep at New Hampshire this weekend, and given his recent results at the track, Brian Vickers just might pull it off. After all, he has finished in the top 15 in five of his last six starts at New Hampshire, including four straight. In fact, Vickers has three top-10s and two top-five finishes in his last four starts at the track.

While his last few starts at New Hampshire haven’t ended well, Kurt Busch has a history of success at the track. He is a three-time winner at New Hampshire, and he has finished in the top 15 in seven of his last 11 starts. During the stretch, he has finished sixth or better five times, including a win in 2008.

Sleeper Special

Veteran Jeff Burton has struggled in recent years, and he will actually lose his ride with Richard Childress Racing after the season. However, he could turn back the clock this weekend at a New Hampshire track where he has been to victory lane four times. More importantly, Burton finished third at the track earlier this year. The third-place effort remains his best finish of 2013, and it is proof that he still knows how to get around the flat oval.

Big Name to Avoid

Although he is one of the most consistent drivers in the series, Carl Edwards has never had a ton of success at New Hampshire. His 14.1 average finish at the track isn’t bad, but in 18 starts, he has just four top-10s and only two top-five finishes. Meanwhile, Edwards last top-five at New Hampshire came 10 races ago so a win this weekend seems highly unlikely.
