There are potential steals for bettors each week, and then there is Brian Vickers at New Hampshire this weekend. Despite winning at the track earlier this year, Vickers is only getting 25/1 odds to win this weekend. Keep in mind that his victory wasn’t his first strong run at New Hampshire. Vickers has finished in the top 15 in five of his last six starts at the track, including four straight. Meanwhile, he has finished in the top 10 three times in his last four starts at New Hampshire and has two top-five finishes during the stretch. Vickers has accomplished a lot more than several big names at New Hampshire recently, and bettors should strongly consider backing him as goes for a season sweep at the track this weekend.
With a lousy two top-five finishes in 27 starts in 2013, it is easy to understand why Jeff Burton is a 50/1 longshot to win this weekend. However, it is worth noting that his best finish of the year came at New Hampshire in July when he finished third. It is also worth noting that he is a four-time winner at the track, and he has more victories at New Hampshire than any other track on the schedule. Granted, it has been a while since Burton has visited victory lane, but he looked more than capable of getting back there with his performance earlier this year. At his long odds, bettors may want to take a chance that Burton rekindles his New Hampshire magic this weekend and delivers a sizeable payout in the process.
He made his Cup Series debut at New Hampshire earlier this year, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. struggled most of the afternoon, eventually wrecked and finished 34th. After such a disastrous debut, it is easy to see why he is only getting 75/1 odds to win this weekend. However, the rookie appears to have flipped a switch in recent weeks, and he returns to New Hampshire in the middle of his best stretch of racing. Stenhouse has six straight top-20 finishes and has top-10s finishes in his last two outings. The top-10s were his first of the year so he is definitely trending in the right direction. He is still an underdog, but a more experienced Stenhouse with momentum on his side is an underdog worth taking a chance on at his current odds.
Bettors looking for a serious longshot this weekend may want to consider Aric Almirola. After making five forgettable starts at New Hampshire, he came out of nowhere to finish fifth at the track earlier this year. Granted, there is just as much of a chance that the strong showing was a fluke rather than a sign of things to come, but at his current 100/1 odds, bettors can afford to take the chance. After all, it only takes a small wager to yield a hefty payout at those odds.
