2013 Quaker State 400 Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs : The Cup Series heads to Kentucky Speedway this weekend, and while the 1.5-mile oval does have a chance to produce an upset winner, it isn’t for the typical reasons. Normally, surprise winners are a result of the playing field being leveled by multi-car crashes that eliminate contenders or long stretches of green flag racing that put the emphasis on fuel mileage and pit strategy rather than pure speed. At Kentucky, the playing is leveled to a degree simply because the track is a relative unknown to many of the drivers. After all, Saturday night’s Quaker State 400 will be just the third Cup event at the track, and drivers and teams are still in the process of finding the areas on the track with the most grip as well as the best setups in general. Keep in mind that when the track was new to the Nationwide Series that it produced one of the biggest upsets in recent memory with a then-unknown David Gilliland winning in an unsponsored car. While there probably won’t be an upset of that magnitude in the Cup race, an unexpected winner could definitely emerge. With that in mind, here is a closer look at a few longshots that could that could get the job done at Kentucky.
Only five guys have finished in the top 10 in both Cup Series events at Kentucky Speedway, and none of them are getting longer odds to win this weekend than Jeff Gordon. He is an 18/1 option to win Saturday night, and while it is true that he hasn’t exactly been piling up victories lately, Gordon does have more wins than any other active driver in the Cup Series. Not to mention the fact that he jumped from 10th in the inaugural race at Kentucky to fifth last year so he has a pretty good feel for the newest addition to the Cup Series schedule. Despite some bad luck this season, Gordon remains one of the better drivers in the series. At a track like Kentucky where no one has a lot of experience, the playing field is leveled to a degree, even among the best drivers. With that in mind, why not take a chance on the driver out of the bunch that is going to provide the largest return on investment. This weekend, that driver is Gordon.
It has been an uneven year for Joey Logano, but he could be a steal for bettors this weekend at his 33/1 odds. After all, he has been dialed in at the 1.5-mile tracks recently, picking up a pair of top-five finishes in his last three starts. In addition, Logano will be making his first start at Kentucky this weekend with Penske Racing, and it just so happens that his new teammate Brad Keselowski is the defending winner of this weekend’s race. Having access to excellent setup information could be just what Logano needs to get over the hump and turn his recent top-five finishes into a trip to victory lane.
Bettors looking for a serious sleeper pick this weekend may want to take a chance on Austin Dillon. Granted, he has only made seven Cup Series starts heading into Saturday night’s Quaker State 400, but as the grandson of legendary owner Richard Childress, the youngster is no stranger to running in excellent equipment against top competition. In fact, Dillon is coming off an impressive showing in his most-recent Cup Series start when he logged a career-high 11th-place finish at Michigan. Perhaps more importantly, Dillon has been stellar in his two Nationwide Series starts at Kentucky. In both Nationwide races at the track in 2012, Dillon sat on the pole, led the most laps and won the race. With the Cup Series visiting Kentucky for just the third time this weekend, Dillon has just as much experience as most of the big names do at the track. Winning a Cup race at Kentucky will be a lot tougher than winning a couple of Nationwide races, but at his 150/1 odds, Dillon is worth the gamble.
