2013 Pure Michigan 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Jimmie Johnson Favored to Win

2013 Pure Michigan 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Jimmie Johnson Favored to Win: The Cup Series returns to Michigan International Speedway this weekend, and the 2.0-mile oval is famous for its wide racing surface and high speeds. While the occasional fuel mileage finish can create some unexpected moments, fast cars tend to get to the front at MIS. Last year, Greg Biffle took advantage of a late engine issue from Jimmie Johnson to score the win. After a wreck took out the dominant car of Mark Martin, Johnson was out front with nine laps to go when his engine went up in smoke. Biffle was the beneficiary, and he scooted by for the win.

Earlier this year, Biffle again took advantage of the misfortunes of a few other drivers to snag another win at MIS. Kasey Kahne was the first leader to find trouble as a cut tire sent him from comfortably out in front to into the wall and to garage. Dale Earnhardt Jr. took command after Kahne’s issue, but an engine failure eventually ended Junior’s day as he was leading. Even after Biffle got to the front, it appeared that Johnson was set to run him down, but a cut tire with a few laps to go ended Johnson’s chances to get by Biffle.

The Favorites

Nobody has been able to handle Greg Biffle at Michigan lately. He is the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and he also went to victory lane when the series visited victory lane in June. Biffle is a four-time winner at MIS for his career, and after his last two performances at the track, a MIS three-peat and season sweep could be on tap for Biffle this weekend.

He is coming off a win at Watkins Glen last weekend, and Kyle Busch is no stranger to running up front at Michigan. In the last five races at the track, he has three top-five finishes and has the third-most laps of any driver. More importantly, Busch won at MIS in August of 2011 and finished fourth earlier this year.

The Dark Horses

Although his last win at Michigan came in 2008, no driver has been more consistent at the track than Carl Edwards. He is a two-time winner at MIS for his career, and his 8.2 average finish is the best among active drivers. Edwards has finished 12th or better in all but two of his 18 starts at Michigan so he is basically a lock to be in contention Sunday.

Don’t let his 38th-place finish at Michigan in June fool you, Kasey Kahne is a serious threat to win this weekend. He was actually leading the race and pulling away when the series visited MIS a couple of months ago when he cut a tire and slammed the wall. Meanwhile, Kahne already has one win and three second-place finishes at Michigan for his career, and he finished third at the track last August.

While Dale Earnhardt Jr. hasn’t won many races since joining Hendrick Motorsports, he has made two trips to victory lane at Michigan. His most-recent victory at the track came last June, and in the August race that season, he finished fourth. Junior was also out front at Michigan earlier this year when an engine failure ended his afternoon. Outside of the restrictor plate tracks, Michigan is probably Junior’s best track.

His luck has been beyond terrible lately, but Denny Hamlin could break out of his slump in a big way this weekend. After all, he has finished in the top 10 in five of his last nine starts at the track, and during the stretch, he has finished third or better four times. Hamlin also won the June race at Michigan in 2010 and 2011 so he knows how to close the deal at the 2.0-mile oval.

Sleeper Special

The injury to Tony Stewart has opened up a golden opportunity for Austin Dillon. The Nationwide Series point leader had an excellent run at Michigan in June when he finished 11th while driving the No. 33 machine. He will have much better equipment to work with this weekend when he drives for a No. 14 team that has finished in the top 10 in six of the last seven Michigan races. He is lacking experience at the Cup level, but Dillon has the talent and equipment to pull off an upset.

Big Name to Avoid

There aren’t many tracks on the schedule where Jimmie Johnson has never won, but Michigan is one of them. Granted, he has had a dominant car on multiple occasions and has even led the most laps on numerous occasions only to run out of gas while leading on the final lap. Heck, he was running down eventual winner Greg Biffle in the closing laps earlier this year when he cut a tire, and he was leading with nine laps to go last August when his engine expired. That being said, all the bad luck is tough to ignore, especially when the payoff is sure to be minimal because of Johnson’s weekly status as one of the odds-on favorites.
