2013 Party in the Poconos 400 Free Picks – Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs: Pocono Raceway has developed the unfortunate reputation for producing boring races, but while the track’s layout and flat, sweeping corners do make passing difficult, the same elements that can lead to boring on-track action can also lead to profitable opportunities for bettors. The importance of track position and general lack of cautions at Pocono results in many races being decided by fuel mileage and pit strategy. As a result, nearly any driver that is running near the front at the end of races at Pocono has a chance of coming out on top. Not surprisingly, there have been a number of surprise winner at the track over the years. With that in mind, here is a closer look at few drivers with longer odds that could end up delivering a big payoff for bettors this weekend at Pocono.
While he isn’t a huge longshot this weekend, Joey Logano is a rather intriguing betting option at his current 20/1 odds. Keep in mind that Logano is the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and more importantly, he won last year in impressive fashion. He sat on the pole and led the most laps on his way to the victory. The win was just the second of his career, but both have come at tracks with flat corners so it is clear that Logano has a good feel for Pocono and similar tracks. Overall, he has four top-15s in his last six starts at Pocono, and as dominant as he was last June, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Logano make a run at back-to-back wins in the event.
At a track where being near the front is half the battle, it is a bit of a surprise to see Ryan Newman only getting 40/1 odds to win this weekend. After all, his 11.8 average finish at Pocono since 2003 is the fourth best in the series, and he has finished in the top 15 in his last nine starts at the track. More importantly, he is a former winner at Pocono and has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four starts at the track. Keep in mind that Newman is an excellent qualifier and one of the toughest drivers in the series to pass, and both skills come in handy at a track like Pocono where track position and clean air are crucial. Plain and simple, Newman always seems to be around the front of the field at Pocono. At his 40/1 odds, he is worth taking a chance on.
Although he hasn’t had a great season, Juan Pablo Montoya is hitting his stride just in time for a trip to a Pocono track where he has had a lot of success. He has just three top-10 finishes all year, but all three have come in the last five races, including a season-best second-place finish in his most-recent start. Meanwhile, Montoya has four top-10 finishes in his last eight starts at Pocono and has finished as high as second at triangle-shaped track. Montoya has let a couple of golden opportunities to win at Pocono slip away in the past, but after coming within three laps of winning last weekend at Dover, he could be ready to seal the deal. He could end up being a steal at his current 50/1 odds.
It took him a while to get a feel for Pocono, but Paul Menard has been on the rise at the track in recent years. He has reeled off five straight top 15 finishes at the track, including three straight finishes of 11th or better. Not to mention the fact that Menard finished a career-best ninth at Pocono in the June race last year. It is also worth noting that his lone Cup Series win to date came via fuel mileage at Indianapolis. Like Indy, Pocono is a 2.5-mile track with flat corners, and races at both tracks can often be determined by fuel mileage and track position. Given Menard’s recent knack for finishing near the front at Pocono, he should be in position to use a little pit strategy to steal a win if the cautions fall the right way. At his current 75/1 odds, bettors may want to take a chance that everything falls into place for Menard this weekend.
