2013 NRA 500 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – NRA 500 Favorites and Sleepers to Win on April 13, 2013 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas:The Cup Series head to Texas Motor Speedway this weekend for the first night race of the 2013 season, and considering the 1.5-mile oval is one of the fastest tracks on the schedule, the sparks should be flying under the lights. In addition to its high speeds, Texas has been known for producing some wild restarts and some exciting finishes. No matter how calm things seem to be in the early stages of the race, the final laps have a way of creating plenty of drama.
Last April, the powerhouse organizations of Hendrick Motorsports and Roush Fenway Racing battled all night long for the win. HMS driver Jimmie Johnson led a race-high 156, but it was RFR driver Greg Biffle that was fastest when it mattered most, holding off Johnson to notch his second career win at the track. Overall, the two organizations claimed seven of the top 10 spots, including four of the top five.

The Favorites
Nobody has been better at Texas in recent years than Matt Kenseth. In his last 10 starts at the track, he leads all drivers with a 6.2 average finish. He has finished in the top 10 in nine of those 10 races, and more importantly, he has finished in the top five in seven of his last eight. Kenseth is a two-time winner at Texas with his most recent victory coming in dominating fashion in 2011. It would be a big surprise if he isn’t a serious contender for the win this weekend.
He is coming off a year when he finished second and first in the two races at Texas, and Jimmie Johnson is no stranger to finishing at the front at the 1.5-mile oval. In 19 starts, he has only finished outside the top 15 once, and more importantly, he has two wins and five second-place finishes. Johnson is also the only driver to have already won multiple races in 2013, and he is a serious threat to add to that total Saturday.
Defending race winner Greg Biffle has been on quite a roll at Texas. His win at the track last spring was part of a nine-race streak of top-10 finishes, and during the stretch, he has finished in the top five on six occasions. Biffle is a two-time winner at the track for his career, and as well as he has been running lately, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him make it back-to-back victories in the spring race.
The Dark Horses
His 15.1 average finish at Texas isn’t great, but Carl Edwards knows how to get to Victory Lane at the track. In fact, he leads all drivers with three wins at Texas and he has finished in the top three twice in his last four starts. Sure, Edwards has been a little inconsistent at the track, but there is no denying his ability to seal the deal and deliver wins.
Although he is having a miserable start to the 2013 season, Tony Stewart could bust out of his slump in a big way this weekend. After all, he is a two-time winner at the track, and he owns the fourth-best driver rating in the series. Stewart also has a pair of top-five finishes in his last three starts at Texas, including a win in 2011. Obviously, it would be nice if he had a little momentum on his side entering Saturday’s race, but Texas is one track where he can show up hot or cold and come away with a win.
Sleeper Special
For a little more than a year now, Brian Vickers has been piling up strong finishes in a part-time role. He has continued the trend this year, finishing eighth and 11th in two starts with Michael Waltrip Racing. This weekend at Texas, Vickers gets to take a turn behind the wheel of the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 as he subs for the injured Denny Hamlin. Considering Hamlin owns the third-best average finish at Texas in the series and is a two-time winner at the track, there is a chance that Vickers could make some noise Saturday. After all, he has proven he can deliver strong results when given strong equipment.
Big Name to Avoid
Success at Texas came quickly for Ryan Newman, and in just his second start at the track, he went to Victory Lane. He added a couple of more top-five finishes after that, but in recent years, his numbers have plummeted. Newman has gone nine straight starts at Texas without cracking the top 10, and his average finish at the track has dropped to an unimpressive 20.3. He just isn’t the driver that won at Texas in 2003.
