2013 Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Marcos Ambrose Favored to Win

NASCAR-Nationwide-Series-Picks-Odds-Predictions2013 Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Marcos Ambrose Favored to Win : While the Cup Series will be in Michigan, the Nationwide Series is set to make a little history when it visits the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the first time. The 2.26-mile road course features 13 turns to go along with a giant straightaway that encompasses the start/finish line that is sure to make for some exciting restarts. Whenever the series visits a new track, there are always plenty of unknowns. This weekend’s race is further muddled by the fact that only one Cup driver is scheduled to pull double duty. Meanwhile, several road course ringers are in the field looking for a win while the Nationwide regulars are thinking big picture as the battle for a championship. The differing agendas should only add to the drama as every driver tries to figure out the road course.

The Favorites

He has only made one Nationwide Series start this year, but A.J. Allmendinger was dominant at Road America. He started on the pole and led a race-high 29 laps on his way to the victory. Allmendinger will back in the Penske Racing No. 22 this weekend, and after his dominating win at the last road course event, a repeat performance is certainly possible this weekend.

Between the Nationwide and Cup levels, Marcos Ambrose has six career victories, and all six have come at road courses, including four in the Nationwide Series. Ambrose is one of the best road racers in the world, and he is also the only full-time Cup driver making the trip to Mid-Ohio. His talent and experience could rule the day.

While several road course ringers have tried to topple the series regulars over the years, none have had the success of Ron Fellows. He has finished as high as second at a road course at the Cup level, and he is a four-time winner in the Nationwide Series. Fellows has made 24 road course starts at the Nationwide level, and he has finished in the top five in 12 of them, including in all three starts last year. Fellows isn’t afraid of the series regulars, and he has proven he can beat them.

The Dark Horses

Although he hasn’t had as many opportunities as some of the other road course ringers, Max Papis has made plenty of noise in the starts he has made. He came within a few inches of winning a Nationwide road race in 2010, and he finished in the top five in a road course event just last season. Papis was also able to jump into a Cup car to replace Tony Stewart at a road course race last weekend and come home in the top 15. Papis is one of the most experienced road racers around, and he is more than capable of winning this weekend.

As he has bounced between the Cup and Nationwide Series over the years, Sam Hornish Jr. became a great road course racer. In fact, no driver has been better in the last five road course events at the Nationwide level. He has finished in the top five in all five starts, compiling a series-leading 3.8 average finish. Hornish has two poles during the stretch, and while he hasn’t won yet, it seems like only a matter of time.

He is probably the quietest star in the Nationwide Series, and in typical Justin Allgaier fashion, he has quietly been one of the best road racers in the series. He has finished in the top 10 in five straight road course events, and in his last three starts, he has a win and a second-place finish to go along with a 3.3 average finish. Allgaier may not be the biggest name in the series, but he can deliver big results at Mid-Ohio this weekend.

Sleeper Special

It was only a matter of time before Brian Vickers’ luck turned around, and now that it has, it is only a matter of time before he wins a race. Vickers has reeled off five straight top-five finishes to climb back into the thick of the title fight, and in two road course starts this year, he has finished sixth and third. Vickers has two more top-five finishes than any other series regular this year. It is a matter of when and not if he ends up in victory lane.

Big Name to Avoid

Although he is the series point leader, Austin Dillon still has room to grow when it comes to road course racing. He has a 14.4 average finish in the last five road course events, and while he does have three straight top-12s, he has never finished better than ninth. Dillon is used to competing for wins and top-five finishes, but this weekend, he will be looking to salvage a decent day and move on.
