2013 Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips 300 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Favorites and Sleepers: I’m going to take a moment before diving into the analysis of this weekend’s Nationwide Series event to point out the fact that NASCAR isn’t exactly growing the brand with the title sponsor of Saturday’s race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Stock car racing already gets labeled a Southern sport, and calling a race the Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips 300 kind of backs up that stereotype. At least NASCAR picked one of the more entertaining tracks to bestow this ridiculous name upon, and the bumping and banging that comes with jamming 43 cars on a half-mile, high-banked bullring can outshine just about anything else.
Last March, Joey Logano and Kyle Busch had the cars to beat for most of the afternoon. Mechanical issues eventually knocked Busch out of contention, but Logano led a race-high 119 laps and was in position to win until a caution late in the race. While Logano opted for fresh tires, Elliott Sadler used a little pit strategy to gain track position. With clean air on his side, Sadler was able to pull away on the final run to pick up his first Nationwide win at Bristol while Logano settled for fourth.

The Favorites
Bristol has always been kind to Kevin Harvick in the Nationwide Series, and in 21 career starts at the track, he has 17 top-10s and four trips to Victory Lane. He has a 7.3 average finish at the track overakk, and that average improves to 5.4 since the start of the 2003 season. During that stretch, Harvick has picked up 11 top-five finishes in 17 starts. He is pretty much a lock to be a serious contender for the in Saturday.
He is basically the current king of Bristol in any series, and Kyle Busch will look to add his impressive Nationwide numbers at the track this weekend. In 17 starts in Thunder Valley, he has picked up four wins and finished third or better nine times. Busch has been on an absolute tear at the track lately, picking up five top-three finishes in his last six Bristol starts, including three wins.
Although he has only sealed the deal at Bristol once in the Nationwide Series, Brad Keselowski has been in the mix for several victories. In 11 career starts at the track, he has finished fourth or better five times. Keselowski has also won two of the last three Cup races at the track, and it is only a matter of time before he makes a return trip to Victory Lane in the Nationwide Series.
The Dark Horses
Defending race winner Elliott Sadler has been on a roll at Bristol since returning to the Nationwide Series full time. He has finished eighth or better in five straight starts, picking up for top-five finishes during the stretch. Sadler’s average finish during the stretch is an impressive 4.2, and with as well as he has been running at Bristol, back-to-back victories in the March race are a real possibility.
He has had some hits and misses at Bristol, but Trevor Bayne has never been at the track in a situation than the one he finds himself in this weekend. He has finished in the top five in the two races leading up to Bristol, and more importantly, he has qualified fourth or better in all three races in 2013. Starting up front is a big advantage at Bristol, and Bayne is clearly thriving both in qualifying and on race day with his new Roush Fenway Racing team. Victories should start coming sooner rather than later.
Sleeper Specials
Although he has yet to contend for a win at Bristol, Sam Hornish Jr. is heading in the right direction. He has finished in the top 15 in all three of his starts at the track, including a career-best 10th-place run in his most recent start. More importantly, Hornish enters the race as the series point leader and is coming off a win at Las Vegas. He is off to by far the best start of his career, and until he cools off, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him win at any track.
Driver to Avoid
An offseason move to Richard Childress Racing has Brian Scott off to a great start. He has finished in the top 10 in all three races leading up to Bristol, but all his success might come to an end in Thunder Valley. Scott has a dismal 25.0 average finish in seven starts at the short track, and he has finished 25th or worse five times compared to just a single top-10.
