2013 IRWIN Tools Night Race Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Johnson, Busch the Favorites

2013-IRWIN-Tools-Night-Race-Odds-Free-Picks-and-Predictions2013 IRWIN Tools Night Race Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Jimmie Johnson Favored to Win: The Cup Series returns to Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend for one of the most popular races on the schedule. Saturday’s IRWIN Tools Night Race has produced some classic moments in NASCAR and is famous for excitement on the track and off. Last year’s race featured a little of both. Halfway through the race Matt Kenseth and Tony Stewart tangled while battling for the lead, resulting in damage to both cars and Stewart throwing his helmet of the hood of Kenseth’s car while on pit road. The set the stage for a battle between Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano and Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson. Logano led a race-high 139 laps, but in the end, it was Hamlin holding off Johnson for the win. Here is a closer look at the drivers that could be celebrating in victory lane this weekend.

The Favorites

With his aggressive driving style, it is no surprise that Kyle Busch has enjoyed plenty of success at short tracks throughout his career. He has been particularly strong at Bristol, and since the start of the 2007 season, his five wins at the track are the most in the series. His 9.8 average finish at the track is also the best in the series, and after a second-place finish in the March race at the track, a win could be on tap for Saturday.

After some early struggles at Bristol, Brad Keselowski has definitely mastered the half-mile short track. In his last four starts, he has finished third or better three times. More importantly, he has two wins during the stretch, including a victory in the August race in 2011. Keselowski is the only driver with multiple wins at Bristol since the start of the 2011 season.

The Dark Horses

Although he is still looking for his first win at Bristol, Clint Bowyer has finished seventh or better in all three of his starts at the track since joining Michael Waltrip Racing in 2012. In fact, he has finished in the top 10 in all nine of his short tracks starts since joining MWR and has finished in the top five in his last five short track starts. Expect Bowyer to be in the mix again this weekend.

While he hasn’t won at Bristol since 2006, there is no denying Kurt Busch’s status as one of the elite drivers at the track. After all, he is a five-time Bristol winner, and he has finished in the top 15 in nine of his last 12 starts at the track. Meanwhile, Busch finished fourth in his first Bristol start with Furniture Row Racing earlier this year so he could be close to recapturing his winning ways at the short track with his new team.

One driver that has really enjoyed the recent changes to Bristol’s layout is Kasey Kahne. In his last six starts at the track, he has finished 11th or better five times. More importantly, Kahne logged his first-career victory at Bristol earlier this year, and he appears to be getting better at the short track. A season sweep isn’t out of the question.

Sleeper Special

Even before it was announced that Brian Vickers would run 12 of the final 13 races in the Michael Waltrip Racing No. 55, he was already scheduled to drive this weekend at Bristol. In three previous starts at the track with MWR, he has compiled a 5.7 average finish and has never finished worse than eighth. Vickers actually battled for the lead at Bristol last August before settling for fourth, and he could be a serious contender yet again this weekend.

Big Name to Avoid

The good news for Denny Hamlin is that he is the defending winner of this weekend’s race at Bristol. The bad news is that he enters this weekend’s race mired in a horrible slump. He has finished outside the top 15 in the last nine races of 2013, posting a 27.2 average finish. During the stretch, Casey Mears, Danica Patrick and David Gilliland are some of the names that have been better, and even Tony Stewart has outscored Hamlin despite missing two races. Defending winner or not, Hamlin just isn’t running well enough to win at any track right now.
