2013 Ford EcoBoost 300 Odds and Predictions: Favorites, Dark Horses, Sleepers and Drivers to Avoid: The 2013 Nationwide Series season will come to a close this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and while Austin Dillon and Sam Hornish Jr. will be racing for a championship, the rest of the field will be racing for a win in Saturday’s Ford EcoBoost 300. Plenty of Cup drivers will be in the field to try to score the victory, including Joey Logano and Kyle Busch, whose teams are separated by just four points in the battle for the owner points championship. Add it up, and two championship battle and a race will all be decided in one race this weekend.
The Favorites
He already has a series-leading 12 wins in the Nationwide Series this season, and Kyle Busch could add to his total in the season finale. After all, he has finished third or better in five of his six starts at Homestead in the series. More importantly, he has four straight top-two finishes at the track, including a pair of wins.
His six wins in the Nationwide Series this year are the second most of any driver, and Brad Keselowski might be the hottest driver in the series. Keep in mind that all six of his victories have come in his last nine starts. Meanwhile, he has finished third or better in three of his last four starts at the Homestead, winning at the track in his most recent start.
In recent years, Matt Kenseth’s starts at Homestead in the Nationwide Series have been sporadic, but he has been strong whenever he has gotten behind the wheel at the track. He has a 4.7 average finish in his last three starts at Homestead, picking up a victory and finishing third or better in two of the three starts. During the stretch, Kenseth hasn’t finished outside the top 10.
The Penske Racing No. 22 team has won 12 races with four different drivers this year, and Joey Logano has been responsible for three of those victories. This weekend, he heads to a Homestead track where he has finished in the top 10 in four of his five career starts. Driving for a team that has scored the most points in the series this year, Logano could certainly add to his and the team’s impressive win total.
The Dark Horses
He has only made one start at Homestead in the Nationwide Series, but Austin Dillon logged a top-five finish in his track debut last year. Meanwhile, he has been the best driver in the series at 1.5-mile tracks this year, and both of his career Nationwide wins have come at 1.5-mile tracks. Dillon may be winless in 2013, but he is also leading the point standings. As well as he has run all season, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him win at a track that features his favorite layout.
Although he got off to a rough start at Homestead-Miami, Sam Hornish Jr. has been making big strides at the track recently. After opening his career with three straight finishes outside the top 20 at the track, he has finished seventh and fourth in his two most recent starts. Hornish has come a long way from the driver that finished dead last in his Homestead debut, and he has actually improved his result in every start at the track. If the trend continues, Hornish will be in victory lane at Homestead sooner rather than later.
Sleeper Special
It has been a quiet couple of months for Regan Smith, but he could make a little noise in the season finale this weekend. After all, Smith is the defending winner of this weekend’s race. He is also a two-time winner this season so he is more than capable of pulling off an upset again Saturday.
Big Name to Avoid
Despite enjoying a solid season, Justin Allgaier probably isn’t going to cap a successful 2013 campaign with a win at Homestead this weekend. In five starts at the track, he has never finished in the top 10. Granted, his 16.6 average finish at the track isn’t terrible, but Allgaier has been a long way off from contending for victories at Homestead.
