2013 Camping World RV Sales 500 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Johnson and Kenseth the Favorites: The Cup Series heads back to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend for the final restrictor plate race of the 2013 season. The race is without question the biggest wild card left on the schedule, and thanks to the pack racing caused by the power-sapping restrictor plates, at least one big wreck is almost inevitable. Last fall’s race at Talladega was a perfect example of the danger that is lurking every lap as a block attempt by Tony Stewart in the closing laps triggered a massive pileup. Matt Kenseth was among the drivers that survived the carnage, and he held off Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and others to pick up the win.
The Favorites
Not only is Matt Kenseth the defending winner of this weekend’s race, but he has been the best in the business at the plate tracks for more than a year. Since the start of the 2012 season, he leads all drivers in wins, laps led, top-five finishes, top-10s and points scored at restrictor plate events. At Talladega alone, he has a 4.0 average finish in three starts during the stretch.
Last weekend’s winner Brad Keselowski could keep the good times rolling this weekend at Talladega. After all, his 12.6 average finish at the track is the best in the series, and in nine starts, he has seven top-15 finishes, including four straight. More importantly, Keselowski is a two-time winner at Talladega.
In addition to being a two-time winner at Talladega, Jimmie Johnson has been next to unstoppable at the plate tracks in 2013. In three restrictor plate events this season, he has compiled a ridiculous 2.3 average finish, winning both races at Daytona and finishing fifth at Talladega in the spring. Johnson clearly has a great feel for the new Generation 6 car in the draft.
The Dark Horses
While his last win at Talladega came back in 2004, Dale Earnhardt Jr. remains one of the best plate track drivers in the series. In fact, his 10.4 average finish in restrictor plate events since the start of the 2012 season is the best of any driver. Junior is also a five-time winner at Talladega for his career so he knows how to seal the deal at the superspeedway.
Normally a longshot at best, David Ragan has emerged as a flat out stud at Talladega since joining Front Row Motorsports prior to the start of last season. In three starts at the track with the organization, he has compiled a 4.0 average finish. Ragan has also finished seventh or better in all three starts, winning the spring race at Talladega earlier this year. A season sweep isn’t out of the question.
Sleeper Special
He doesn’t make many starts these days, but Michael Waltrip will be behind the wheel this weekend at Talladega. More importantly, Waltrip is a former winner at the track, and he has two top-10s in his last three starts at Talladega, including a fourth-place finish earlier this year. Waltrip was also battling for the lead in the closing laps of last year’s fall race at the track before getting spun into the wall so he still knows how to get to the front at the track even as a part-time driver.
Big Name to Avoid
Although he finished ninth at Talladega last fall, Ryan Newman has been largely awful at the track recently. He has finished outside the top 20 in seven of his last eight starts at the track. More concerning is the fact that he has finished outside the top 30 in five of his starts during the rough patch.
