2013 Camping World RV Sales 500 Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs : The Cup Series heads back to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend for Sunday’s Camping World RV Sales 500. The race kicks off the second half of the Chase for the Sprint Cup, and it is also the final restrictor plate event of 2013. While an upset can happen any weekend in the cup Series, the odds of having a surprise driver get to victory lane increase dramatically when the power-sapping restrictor plate gets involved and the field spends the entire race lumped in a giant pack. At least one big wreck is all but inevitable, and any driver that is still running on the lead lap on the final lap has a shot at winning. As a result, Sunday’s trip to Talladega is a golden opportunity for bettors to hit it big with a longshot. With that in mind, here is a closer look at a few underdogs that could be worth betting on at Talladega.
While his 40/1 odds say longshot, David Ragan’s recent numbers at Talladega scream favorite. After all, he is going for a season sweep at the track this weekend following his victory in the spring race. Meanwhile, he has compiled a 4.0 average finish in his last three starts at Talladega since joining Front Row Motorsports at the start of the 2012 season. Ragan has finished seventh or better in all three starts during the stretch, including back-to-back finishes of fourth or better. Plain and simple, he could be an absolute steal at his current odds.
Veteran Jeff Burton has seen his numbers decline rapidly in recent years, but he has remained one of the best in the business at the restrictor plate tracks. In fact, he has scored the fifth-most points in the series at the plate tracks since the starts of last season. At Talladega specifically, Burton has three top-10s in his last four starts, including finishes of second and 10th in his last two starts in the fall race. He is a 40/1 longshot to win this weekend, but considering he has performed like a top-five driver Talladega for more than a year, bettors may definitely want to take a chance on him Sunday.
He spends most of his time in the announcers’ booth these days, but Michael Waltrip deserves the attention of bettors when he gets behind the wheel this weekend. The guy has always known how to handle the draft at plate tracks, and four of his Cup Series wins have come at restrictor plate events, including a victory at Talladega. More importantly, he has remained a factor at plate tracks as a part-time driver the past couple of years. Waltrip finished fourth at Talladega earlier this year, and he making a pass for the lead in the closing laps of the fall race at the track last season when he was wrecked by Tony Stewart. In other words, he know how to get to the front when it counts, making him a potential bargain at his current 40/1 odds.
Although his Front Row Motorsports teammate David Ragan has hogged all the glory at Talladega recently, David Gilliland has enjoyed a successful run of his own at the track. He has reeled off three straight top-15 finishes at Talladega, including a second-place effort earlier this year. Essentially, Gilliland has been Ragan’s drafting partner in each of the last three trips to Talladega, and the duo has been able to get to the front of the pack in the closing laps each and every time. Thus far, Gilliland has been the one pushing Ragan, but the roles could just as easily get reversed this weekend. At his current 50/1 odds to win, bettors may want to bank on Sunday being Gilliland’s turn to be pushed toward the checkered flag.
