The Cup Series takes a break from all the left-hand turns this weekend to tackle the 10-turn Infineon Raceway. The road course features flat corners, elevation changes, and left and right-hand turns. Road racing is such a unique skill that some drivers, even some big names, never master. Throw in the fact that races at Infineon also require perfect pit strategy, and it is not surprising that some unexpected names end up in Victory Lane.

Last season, Kurt Busch flat out took it to the competition. He led 76 of the 110 laps on his way to a dominating victory. For Busch, it was his first-career road course victory. Denny Hamlin was the only other driver to lead double digit laps, but mechanical issues took him out of contention early. From there, Busch was in command.

The Favorites – 2012 Toyota/Save Mart 350 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He is the all-time leader in road course wins, and Jeff Gordon is also the all-time leader in wins at Infineon. He has five victories at the track, and he has finished in the top 10 in his last six starts at the track. Gordon’s 8.7 average finish at the track is the best in the series, and in 19 career starts, he has finished outside the top 10 only three times. He is basically a lock to be in contention for the win this weekend.

Since joining the Cup Series, Marcos Ambrose has wasted little time establishing himself as one of the premier road racers in the series. He has finished sixth or better in three straight starts at Infineon, and if not for a bizarre situation at the end of the 2010 event when he shut off his engine under caution, he would already have a win at the track. Ambrose finally broke through with a road course win at Watkins Glen last summer, and it is only a matter of time before he adds a win at Infineon.

After struggling at road courses early in the year, five-time champion Jimmie Johnson has molded himself into one of the best. He won at Infineon in 2010 and has finished seventh or better in his last three starts at the track. Johnson has turned one of his weaknesses into one of his strengths, and he is just starting to scratch the surface of road course potential.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Toyota/Save Mart 350 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

In his first career start at Infineon, Juan Pablo Montoya went to Victory Lane. He has gone on to add four top-10 finishes in five starts at the track. His 9.0 average finish at Infineon is the second best among active drivers, and he has been an excellent road racer dating back to his Formula One days. Montoya has had a miserable time the last two years, but he is still a factor whenever the series visits a road course.

He is already on the short list of the best road racers in NASCAR history, and Tony Stewart still has plenty of road course wins left in him. He is a two-time winner at Infineon, and he has finished in the top 10 in four of his last five starts at the track. Stewart has finished third and second in the two races leading up to Infineon, and third win at the 10-turn road course is a real possibility this weekend.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Toyota/Save Mart 350 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

With a background in road racing, it is no surprise that A.J. Allmendinger has had some strong runs at Infineon throughout his career. He has finished in the top 15 in three straight starts at the track, finishing as high as seventh. Allmendinger should only be better this weekend when he makes his first start at the track with Penske Racing. In fact, he will be driving for the No. 22 team that won this race last season with Kurt Busch behind the wheel.

He is probably the most-famous road ringer in the series today, and Boris Said has made his presence felt at Infineon in the past. In his last nine starts at the track, he has finished in the top 10 five times. Said is guaranteed a spot in the field in the FAS Lane Racing No. 32, and he has the talent to win and absolutely nothing to lose.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Toyota/Save Mart 350 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Although he is leading the points entering Sunday’s race, Matt Kenseth has never been much of a road racer. In 12 starts at Infineon, he has just a single top-10 finish and has never finished in the top five. With a 21.5 average finish at the track, Kenseth is going to be just another driver this weekend.
