2012 Sylvania 300 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Sylvania 300 Favorites and Sleepers to Win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire: For the second time this season, the Cup Series visits New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The flat, 1.0-mile oval is notorious for its tough passing conditions, and as a result crew chiefs will do whatever it takes to get their driver out front. Running a ton of laps on one set of tires is standard and stretching fuel to the last drop is often a must for drivers hoping to get to Victory Lane. Needless to say, the outcome of a lot of races at New Hampshire is decided in the final laps.
Last fall, several drivers took turns leading the race for an extended period of time. Jeff Gordon led a race-high 78 laps, and Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, Ryan Newman and Clint Bowyer all led more than 40 laps, as well. It appeared that Bowyer would come out on top as he held the lead on the final lap, but his fuel tank went dry, handing the victory to Tony Stewart. On a day where so many drivers spent a lot of laps out front, Stewart scored the win despite leading just two laps.
Earlier this year, Kasey Kahne made his first start at New Hampshire with Hendrick Motorsports a memorable one by reaching Victory lane. After a miscue between Denny Hamlin and his crew chief dropped the dominant No. 11 car from first to 15th, Kahne took the top spot and never looked back. Hamlin, who led a race-high 150 laps, climbed all the way back to second but couldn’t track down Kahne before the laps ran out.
The Favorites – 2012 Sylvania 300 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Defending race winner Tony Stewart is no stranger to running up front at New Hampshire. He is a three-time winner at the 1.0-mile track, and in his last 20 starts, he has finished third or better eight times. Stewart has been at or near the front at New Hampshire since his rookie season, and he proved last fall that he can still seal the deal and get to Victory Lane.
Although he has just one victory at New Hampshire, Denny Hamlin has been the most consistent driver at the track since joining the Cup Series. His 8.5 average finish at the track is the best among active drivers, and in 13 starts, he has finished outside the top 15 just once. More importantly, Hamlin has finished sixth or better seven times at New Hampshire and third or better three times in his last four starts. It is only a matter of time before he gets another win at the track.
The Dark Horses – 2012 Sylvania 300 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Clint Bowyer has seven career wins in the Cup Series, and two of them have come at New Hampshire during the Chase. He was on his way to adding a third win at the track last fall before he ran out of fuel while leading on the final lap. Bowyer finished third at New Hampshire earlier this year, and there is no denying the fact that he knows how to win at this track amid the pressure of the Chase.
It has been more than a decade since Jeff Gordon won at New Hampshire, but he hasn’t exactly been struggling at the track either. He has finished second four times since his last win, and he has finished in the top 15 in his last 14 starts at New Hampshire. Gordon has finished sixth or better four times in his last five starts at the track, and after leading the most laps at the track in this race last season, he is more than capable of snapping his winless drought at New Hampshire.
His New Hampshire debut with Hendrick Motorsports ended with a win for Kasey Kahne, and this weekend, he will try for a season sweep at the track. Overall, he has four straight top-15s at New Hampshire, compiling a 9.0 average finish during the stretch. The move to Hendrick Motorsports proved to be the extra boost he needed to break through at New Hampshire, and his win in July might have been the first of many at the 1.0-mile track.
Sleeper Special – 2012 Sylvania 300 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
In the summer race at New Hampshire in 2009, then-rookie Joey Logano used a little pit strategy and a lot of help from Mother Nature to pick up his first-ever Cup Series win. While his rain-shortened victory can be chalked up to luck, Logano has had plenty of solid runs at the track since. In fact, he has three straight top-15s at New Hampshire, including a fourth-place run. Keep in mind that both of his Cup wins have come at flat tracks, and the former New Hampshire winner could pull the upset again this weekend.
Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Sylvania 300 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Although he is one of the best intermediate track drivers in the sport, Matt Kenseth tends to have his issues with flat tracks, and New Hampshire is no exception. In his last nine starts at the track, he has cracked the top 10 only once. Worse yet, he doesn’t have a single top-five finish during the stretch and has finished outside the top 15 seven times. Kenseth one of the favorites to contend for the title, but he is a longshot to win this weekend.
