2012 Subway Jalapeno 250 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Favorites and Sleepers to Win 2012 Subway Jalapeno 250: There is something about a trip to Daytona that brings out the stars in the Nationwide Series. Yes, sponsorship dollars play a big role because companies want the big name Cup driver behind the wheel at one of NASCAR’s most-popular tracks, but drivers want to be in the field, as well. After all, a win at Daytona is something special regardless of the series. Every driver wants to win the Daytona 500, but they will take a trip to Victory Lane at the world renown track however they can get it.
Last year, it appeared the race was going to be decided by Elliott Sadler and Carl Edwards. The two combined to lead 53 of the 100 laps with Sadler leading a race-high 31 laps. If one of those two didn’t win, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart and Brad Keselowski seemed like the next in line. However, the Joe Gibbs Racing duo of Joey Logano and Kyle Busch snuck up on everyone, hanging back in the pack until the late stages of the race and charging to the front. The plan worked to perfection, and although Logano led just one lap all night, he used a push from Busch to lead the final lap and win the race.
The Favorites – 2012 Subway Jalapeno 250 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
In 16 career starts at Daytona in the Nationwide Series, Kevin Harvick has finished 12th or better 14 times. His 6.9 average finish at the track is the best of any driver in the field that has made more than one or two starts. Harvick only has one win at Daytona in his career, but he has cracked the top five on nine other occasions. He is basically a lock to be in contention for the win Friday night.
It is hard to find a driver that has been better than Kyle Busch in the last 10 Nationwide races at Daytona. He has finished seventh or better eight times during the stretch, picking up a win and three second-place finishes. Busch has taken a few weeks off from the Nationwide Series to let his older brother Kurt drive his car, but Kyle should make plenty of noise in his return.
He has never finished outside the top 20 at Daytona in the Nationwide Series, and Joey Logano has finished 12th or better in five of his last six starts at the track. More importantly, he has been incredible in the July race. Logano finished fourth in the 2009 event, second in 2010, and went to Victory Lane in this race one year ago. He has won a series-high five races in the series this year, and Logano will try to add to that total by making it back-to-back July wins at Daytona.
The Dark Horses – 2012 Subway Jalapeno 250 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Two Cup drivers that are worth considering this weekend are Denny Hamlin and Kurt Busch. Busch made his first career Nationwide start at Daytona earlier this year, finishing in the top 10. He also has nine top-10 finishes in 10 starts in the series in 2012. Meanwhile, Hamlin has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four starts at the track, winning the July race in 2008. Neither driver has the extensive history of success that some of the other Cup regulars boast, but both are legitimate threats this weekend.
Richard Childress Racing teammates Austin Dillon and Elliott Sadler have been a dynamic duo all season. The two are tied for the series lead with 11 top-10s, Dillon leads the series with eight top-five finishes, and Sadler is sitting atop the point standings. More importantly, both drivers finished in the top five at Daytona earlier this year. RCR has always had an excellent plate track program, and Dillon and Sadler have the talent to take advantage of the excellent equipment.
Sleeper Specials – 2012 Subway Jalapeno 250 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Thanks to one of the craziest finishes in recent memory, James Buescher won the season opener at Daytona to start the 2012 season. He was actually running 11th coming off the final corner, but when the 10 cars in front of him were all involved in a massive wreck, Buescher snuck through for the win. For what it’s worth, the young driver finished eighth in his only other start at Daytona in the Nationwide Series. Buescher should be near the front again, and as he showed in February, anybody close to the front has a shot.
He made his Daytona debut in the Nationwide Series in February, and Cole Whitt responded with a strong fourth-place finish. While the finish could be written off as beginner’s luck, driving for Dale Earnhardt Jr. might have something to do with his success, as well. Junior is one of the best in NASCAR history as working the draft, and his equipment at JR Motorsports is always among the best at the plate tracks. Whitt benefits not only from the equipment but from the knowledge Junior can impart. His top-five run to open the year probably wasn’t the last time Whitt will be in contention at Daytona.
Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Subway Jalapeno 250 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has had trouble putting together consistent finishes at Daytona. He has finished as high as third at the track, but he has also failed to crack the top 15 in three of his five starts. Stenhouse’s 18.6 average finish at Daytona is well below what he is used to averaging at most tracks. The fact that he really doesn’t have a teammate to work with probably plays a role in his struggles.
