2012 STP 300 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – STP 300 Favorites and Sleepers to Win at Chicagoland Speedway: NASCAR betting odds to win the 2012 STP this Sunday, July 22nd at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois have been posted at all the major Las Vegas and best online sportsbooks with Kyle Busch having been installed as the 6/1 +600 favorite to win the 2012 STP 300.
While the Cup Series takes a week off to prepare for the Brickyard 400 and Indianapolis Motor Speedway in two weeks, the Nationwide Series takes center stage Sunday afternoon at Chicagoland Speedway. The 1.5-mile oval has been a part of the series since 2001, but this will only be the second season that the track has hosted two Nationwide races. With most of the Cup regulars electing to take the week off, this weekend’s STP 300 is a golden opportunity for the series regulars to snag a victory.
When the series visited Chicagoland last June, fuel mileage led to one of the more bizarre finishes of the year. Carl Edwards dominated the event, leading 144 of the 200 laps. He was also leading on the final lap when he ran out of fuel, handing the lead to Justin Allgaier. Shortly after passing Edwards, Allgaier also ran out fuel. Allgaier and Edwards coasted to the finish line for a 1-2 finish, with Allgaier scoring the win despite leading just a single lap.
There was no late-race drama in the return trip to the track in September. Brad Keselowski put on a clinic, leading a race-high 158 of the 200 laps and stretching out his lead to a comfortable margin throughout the second half of the event. Edwards again had a strong car, leading 35 laps early. However, he had nothing for Keselowski down the stretch, and Edwards was forced to play second fiddle again.
The Favorite – 2012 STP 300 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Only one Cup regular is making the trip to Chicagoland, but since that driver is Kyle Busch, the series regulars have one heck of an obstacle standing in their way. Busch has four straight top-five finishes at the track, and in his last three starts, he has two wins and a second-place finish. He has also won more Nationwide races than any driver in series history, and the path to Victory Lane goes through Busch Sunday.
The Dark Horses – 2012 STP 300 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Rookie Austin Dillon has been red hot lately, and if not for three minor penalties throughout the course of the year, he would be sitting atop the standings. As it stands, he is just three points back and enters this weekend’s race with three straight finishes of fourth or better. Dillon will be making his Chicagoland debut this weekend, but after absolutely clobbering the field at the last 1.5-mile track the series visited, it is tough to count him out because of inexperience.
It hasn’t been instant success for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. at Chicagoland, but he has improved his finish in all three starts at the track. Last fall, he finished a career-best eighth, and given his career success at other 1.5-mile tracks, it seems like only a matter of time before he contends for a win. More importantly, Stenhouse’s three victories are the most of any series regular, and he will be chomping at the bit to take advantage of the weakened field.
Sleeper Specials – 2012 STP 300 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
He has quietly caught fire the last several weeks, and Sam Hornish Jr. has climbed to within 32 points of the top spot in the standings. He has finished in the top 10 in five straight races, finishing sixth or better four times during the stretch. Hornish also finished fifth in his first-career start at Chicagoland last fall. This is his best opportunity to date to win a race this year, and with momentum on his side, he might just capitalize on the chance.
Thanks to the right fuel strategy last year, Justin Allgaier is the defending winner of this weekend’s race. He has been solid at the track in his other starts, finishing in the top 15 in all four starts and compiling an 8.8 average finish. Allgaier may need to play the strategy game in order to repeat, but his ability to run near the front should give him a chance to spring another upset.
Big Name to Avoid – 2012 STP 300 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
This weekend, Penske Racing developmental driver Parker Kligerman will be behind the wheel of the same car Brad Keselowski drove to a win at Chicagoland last fall. That being said, the inexperienced Kligerman probably won’t be producing the same type of results. In 17 career Nationwide starts, he has never recorded a top-five finish. Kligerman has plenty potential and talent, but he isn’t ready to win races at this level just yet.
