Road America is one of the newer additions to the Nationwide Series schedule, and the 14-turn road course is certainly unique. At more than four miles in length, it only takes 50 laps to reach the race’s schedule distance. However, the length track also allows drivers plenty of chances to gain or lose positions during the course of one lap. There really isn’t another track that resembles Road America, and since this weekend’s event is only the third Nationwide race at the road course, it should be a wide-open affair.

Last year’s race was highlighted by a wild finish. Michael McDowell had the car to beat, leading 30 of the 57 laps. However, he picked the wrong fuel strategy and was forced to make an extra stop that took him out of contention. Justin Allgaier seemed poised to capitalize on the opportunity, but a rash of late cautions pushed him to his fuel limit, as well. Allgaier gambled, but he ran out of fuel on the final lap, handing the win to Reed Sorenson. The only lap Sorenson led all race long was the final one.

The Favorites – 2012 Sargento 200 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Considering he is the only full-time Cup Series driver running at Road America, Kurt Busch should have a huge edge in experience. It also helps that he has been a solid road racer throughout his career, including winning the Cup event at Infineon last season. Busch will be making his Road America debut, but he has the talent and experience to win.

He has been a part of both Nationwide events at Road America, and Ron Fellows has made plenty of noise. He has finished second in both starts, and the career road racer clearly has a feel for the 14-turn track. Fellows has been the most-productive road course ringer in Nationwide Series history. He has two wins and six top-five finishes in 17 starts, and he could add a third win to his resume this weekend,

The Dark Horses – 2012 Sargento 200 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

If not for some poor fuel strategy, Michael McDowell would have won at Road America last season. He won the pole for the event in 2011 and led more than half the laps. McDowell will once again have strong equipment at his disposal, as he prepares to pilot the same Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 machine that Joey Logano has driven to a series-leading five wins. McDowell let one slip away at this track last year, and he will be out to seal the deal this weekend.

Even in his days in the Cup Series, Elliott Sadler was an underrated road course racer. He has never won a road course event, but he does seem to find a way to get near the front. He doesn’t make many mistakes, which should be a big advantage at a track with 14 turns. Sadler finished fourth in his Road America debut last season, and there is no reason to think he won’t be in the mix again this weekend.

Although his finish didn’t reflect it, Justin Allgaier had one of the best cars at Road America last season. At worst, he was going to finish second, and he was actually leading on the final lap when he ran out of gas and finished 19th. Allgaier will be out to finish the job this weekend.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Sargento 200 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He has won road course events in multiple countries and in multiple race series, and Jacques Villeneuve has the talent to add a Nationwide win to that resume. Stock cars may not be his bread and butter, but his road racing experience far outweighs his inexperience in a Nationwide car. Villeneuvee finished third at Road America last season, and driving for Penske Racing this weekend, he should have every opportunity to contend again.

While Road America wasn’t kind to him in his track debut last season, Max Papis is no stranger to contending at road courses. In fact, he has come within one lap of winning a road course race in the Nationwide Series. Papis will be driving for Richard Childress Racing this weekend, and with strong equipment to work with, he has the road racing experience to be a contender.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Sargento 200 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He is one of the best drivers in the Nationwide Series, but Ricky Stenhouse Jr. doesn’t have a big background in road racing. He managed a solid eighth-place finish last season, but he was never a serious contender for the win. Stenhouse is eyeing his second straight series title, and this weekend will be all about salvaging a decent day and moving on.
