Auto Racing

Martinsville Speedway is the exact opposite of what most people think of when they think about NASCAR. The track is flat, shaped like a paperclip and only a half mile in length. In fact, it is NASACR’s smallest and slowest track. However, assuming the track produces boring racing is a big mistake. Drivers beat and bang on one another for 500 laps and have to fight for every position. Not surprisingly, Martinsville has seen several memorable finishes in its history, including some in recent years.

Last April, the track delivered another wild finish. After pit strategy knocked the dominant cars of Clint Bowyer, Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin out of contention, the real fun began. Kyle Busch appeared to have things under control, leading a race-high 151 laps. However, Dale Earnhardt Jr. ran down Busch in the closing laps and grabbed the lead. Junior got a taste of his own medicine a few laps later when Kevin Harvick bumped his way by and went on to win the race.

In the fall event, the outcome was again decided in the final laps. Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon combined to lead 174 laps and were out front late in the race. However, Tony Stewart unleashed an incredible comeback, rallying from a lap down and passing Johnson for the lead during a green-white-checkered finish.

The Favorites – 2012 Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He has been nothing short of dominant at Martinsville since joining the Cup Series, and Jimmie Johnson leads all drivers with a 5.5 average finish at the track. He has six wins at the track, and he has finished 11th or better in 19 straight starts. Johnson has finished outside the top five only three times in his last 17 starts at Martinsville, and it is a near guarantee that he will be in the mix for the win Sunday.

The only driver that has threatened Johnson’s run of dominance at Martinsville has been Denny Hamlin. He has four wins at the track, including three in his last five starts. Hamlin’s 6.5 average finish is the second best in the series, and he has finished in the top 12 in his last 11 starts. More importantly, he has finished sixth or better 10 times during the stretch. Look for Hamlin to be at the front of the field.

His seven wins at Martinsville are the most among active drivers, and Jeff Gordon might not be done adding to that total. Although his last win at the track came in 2005, he has finished in the top five in 13 of his last 14 starts, including two straight. Gordon has been in the mix for the win in almost every start for more than half a decade. It is only a matter of time before he gets back to Victory Lane.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Although he won at the track last fall, Tony Stewart has been anything but consistent at Martinsville in recent years. In fact, he has finished 24th or worse in his three starts at the track prior to his victory. Still, Stewart has won twice in 2012 and has won seven of the last 15 races dating back to last season. Bettors would be foolish not to consider him a threat Sunday.

A flip has definitely flipped for Kevin Harvick at Martinsville. After going 16 starts without picking up a single top-five finish, he has finished fourth or better in his last three starts at the track. Not to mention the fact that he is the defending winner of this weekend’s race. His 14.6 average finish is very misleading.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He hasn’t won a race since 2008, but Dale Earnhardt Jr. is running as well as he has in several seasons. He has finished seventh or better in his last three starts at Martinsville, and he came within a few laps of winning at the track last April. Junior enters the race third in the standings, and with momentum on his side at one of his better tracks, the seemingly endless drought could finally come to an end.

Brian Vickers will be making just five Cup starts this season, and one of them will come this weekend at Martinsville. He made his debut this season at Bristol and responded with a top-five finish. Martinsville isn’t Bristol, but both are short tracks and do have some similarities. More importantly, Vickers has to prove himself whenever he gets behind the wheel if he wants to land a full-time ride next season. There won’t be a more motivated driver on the track Sunday.

Drivers to Avoid – 2012 Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

It has been a rough year for Kurt Busch, and it probably won’t get any better this weekend. He has gone 11 straight starts at Martinsville without cracking the top 10, and he has finished outside the top 15 nine times during the stretch. Even though Busch is a former winner at the paperclip-shaped track, he isn’t likely to be a threat this weekend.

A trip to Martinsville is the last thing Kasey Kahne needed. He is off to a miserable start with Hendrick Motorsports, and he has gone 10 straight starts at Martinsville without finishing in the top 10. For his career, Kahne has a forgettable 20.7 average finish at the track.
