If NASCAR hosted a coolest nickname contest among its track, Dover International Speedway would be one of the top contenders for the crown. The high-banked concrete oval has become known as the “Monster Mile” thanks to its ability to chew up and spit out racecars. A narrow racing surface surrounded on both sides by concrete walls make sure that any car that spins doesn’t stop until it has endured plenty of damage. Throw in a tight, dangerous pit road, and staying out of trouble is easier said than done.

Last spring, two of NASCAR’s juggernauts waged an epic battle at the front for most of the afternoon. Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards combined to lead 324 of the 400 laps, with Johnson leading a race-high 207. Believing they had the cars to beat, both drivers took four tires on a caution late in the event, putting themselves behind several drivers on older tires. Instead of knifing to the front, Johnson and Edwards remained mired in traffic, while Matt Kenseth used clean air to drive away for the win.

It was nearly déjà vu in the fall race, as Johnson and Edwards again emerged as the top contenders. This time the duo led 273 of the 400 laps, with Johnson leading a race-high 157. However, pit road again proved to be the deciding factor. Kurt Busch’s pit crew delivered a couple of fast stops at the end of the race, putting Busch out front for the final restart. Clean air again proved to be king, and Busch held off Edwards and Johnson for his first-ever Dover victory.

The Favorites – 2012 FedEx 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Five-time champ Jimmie Johnson has dominated several tracks in his career, and Dover has always been one of the best. He is a six-time winner at the track, and his 9.3 average finish at the track is second best among active drivers. Johnson has three wins and a second-place finish in his last six starts at Dover, and a seventh trip to Victory Lane could be on tap this weekend.

Over the last six races, no driver has scored more points than Kyle Busch. Needless to say, he brings a little momentum into this weekend’s race at Dover – a track where he has had a lot of success over the years. Busch is a two-time winner at the track and has finished sixth or better in nine of his 14 starts, including four straight. He also won the spring event at Dover as recently as 2010.

In seven of his last eight trips to Dover, Matt Kenseth has left with a top-five finish. He is also the defending winner of this weekend’s race and has finished in the top five in his last six starts at Dover in the spring event. Kenseth is a two-time winner at the track in his career, and he seems to be in the mix for another victory whenever the series visits the track.

The Dark Horses – 2012 FedEx 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

His last win in the Cup Series came in March of last season, but Carl Edwards has been the model of consistency at Dover. The media didn’t nickname him “Concrete Carl” for nothing. He leads all drivers with a 7.3 average finish at the track, and he has finished outside the top 10 just once in his last 11 starts. Edwards has just one victory during the stretch, but he has also finished third or better six times. History says he will be a factor for the win. Edwards just has to close the deal.

Point-leader Greg Biffle’s strong season should continue this weekend at Dover. He has 12 top-15 finishes in his last 15 starts at the track, including two trips to Victory Lane. During a four-race stretch from 2007-2009, Biffle finished third or better in four straight starts at Dover. With as well as he has been running in 2012, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him return to that form this weekend and snag his third win at the track.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 FedEx 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Since joining the Cup Series full time in 2006, Martin Truex Jr. has managed just a single win. That victory came at Dover in 2007, when he absolutely dominated the field. He enters this weekend’s race in the middle of his best season at the Cup level, and after an eighth-place run at Dover last spring, the site of Truex’s first win could also become the track where he ends his nearly six-year winless drought.

After posting unspectacular finishes at Dover in his first five starts, Marcos Ambrose erupted last year. He finished a strong third in the spring event in 2011 and followed it up with a solid ninth-place effort in the fall. Ambrose hasn’t shown the year-to-year consistency at Dover just yet, but his performance at the track last year definitely makes him a wild card worth watching this weekend.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 FedEx 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Early in his career, Tony Stewart owned Dover, and he even swept both races at the track in 2000. The problem is that “Smoke” hasn’t won a race at the “Monster Mile” since his season sweep. In fact, he has just one top-five finish in his last 15 starts at the track and has finished outside the top 20 in in his last three starts. Stewart hasn’t hid the fact that he has lost the handle at Dover, and he has shown no signs of being able to win a race at the concrete oval.
