The 2012 Sprint Cup season has its unofficial start this weekend with the running of the Budweiser Shootout. The non-points event is divided into two segments, with the first segment lasting 25 laps and the final segment consisting of 50 laps. In order to qualify for the event, drivers must have finished in the top 25 in points last season or be a former winner of the Budweiser Shootout, Daytona 500 or the July event at Daytona. Based on the criteria, 31 drivers are eligible for this year’s race.

Last year, the two dominant cars belonged to Jeff Burton and Ryan Newman. Burton led a race-high 32 laps, and Newman led 18. However, neither driver was out front when it mattered. Instead, Kurt Busch surged to the front in the closing laps, picking up his first-career win at a restrictor-plate track. In typical fashion, Earnhardt-Childress engines had a strong showing, placing four cars in the top nine spots.

The Favorites – 2012 Budweiser Shootout Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

No driver has dominated the Shootout in recent years like Tony Stewart. Since the start of the 2001 season, he has a 5.2 average finish in the event. He has three wins and seven top-five finishes during the stretch, and he has never finished outside the top 15. The Daytona 500 may continue to elude Stewart, but he has had no trouble winning every other race at the famed track.

Two of the last three Budweiser Shootouts have been won by Kevin Harvick. He has finished in the top 10 in six of his seven starts in the event, and his 6.6 average finish is the second best in the series. Harvick has been the top plate track racer in the series the last two seasons, and his dominance has more than carried over into the Shootout.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Budweiser Shootout Lines, Preview and Expert Picks

Although he has never won the Shootout, Jamie McMurray has been close three years in a row. He has finished second, third and second in the event the last three years, and he is a two-time winner at Daytona during the regular season. In addition to being an above average plate racer, McMurray has the added advantage of using Earnhardt-Childress engines. He has the talent and equipment to get to Victory Lane Saturday night.

He has just one win in the Budweiser Shootout, but Jimmie Johnson has been a consistent face near the front of the field. He has seven top-10 finishes in nine career starts in the event and has never finished outside the top 15. Johnson’s 6.7 average finish is the third-best in the series, and with all three of his Hendrick Motorsports teammates also in the field, he should have plenty of help in the draft.

Sleeper Special – 2012 Budweiser Shootout Vegas Odds, Expert Predictions and Free Picks

His move to Richard Childress Racing last season led to a career year for Paul Menard. Some of his best showings came at Daytona, where he finished in the top 10 in both events in 2011. Menard has made just one career start in the Shootout, but he has never raced in the event with the equipment he will have this weekend. He is one driver that could come seemingly out of nowhere and steal the show.

Driver to Avoid – 2012 Budweiser Shootout Betting Odds, Predictions and Free NASCAR Picks

Carl Edwards has nearly won four of the last five regular season races at Daytona, but he has never run well in the Shootout. In five career starts, he doesn’t have a single top-five finish and has never finished in the top 10 only once. For whatever reason, Edwards doesn’t seem to have the same feel for the 75-lap race as he does for the 400 and 500-mile races.
