2012 Bashas Supermarket 200 Odds, Predictions, Betting Tips and Free Picks – Favorites and Lines to Win the Bashas Supermarket 200: It is going to be tough for Phoenix International Raceway to top the action Daytona produced in the season opener last weekend. After all, it’s not often that the driver running 11th exiting the final corner ends up in Victory Lane. That being said, PIR did repave its surface last season, and the fall race at the track produced a surprising first-time winner. If the trend continues, the 2012 season could open with an unexpected name in Victory Lane for the second week in a row.
Last February, Kyle Busch had what anyone would describe as a pretty good afternoon. Busch started on the pole and led all 200 laps on his way to the win. Fellow Cup drivers Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Ryan Newman all tried to chase down Busch, but it just wasn’t going to happen. Busch had the car to beat from the drop of the green flag.
In the fall event, Roush Fenway Racing appeared to be heading for a banner afternoon. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. led a race-high 73 laps, and all three Roush Fenway drivers were running the top five most of the day. However, Sam Hornish Jr. made a surprising charge in the second half of the race, overtaking all three RFR cars to take the lead. Hornish would go on to lead 61 laps and win his first-ever Nationwide race.
The Favorites – 2012 Bashas Supermarket 200 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
After his flawless performance in this race one year ago, Kyle Busch has to be considered among the favorites this weekend. He is a four-time winner at Phoenix and has won at the track in two of his last three starts. Three of his four victories at PIR have come in the February race, and Busch is gunning for his third straight February win at the track this weekend.
Whenever Kevin Harvick gets behind the wheel at Phoenix in the Nationwide Series, he is a threat to win. He has finished in the top 10 in his last 13 starts at PIR, picking up an incredible 12 top-five finishes during the stretch. Harvick has just a single win at Phoenix, but in his last four starts, he has three second-place finishes and a third-place effort. He will be near the front.
The Dark Horses – 2012 Bashas Supermarket 200 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Although he is still looking for his first win at PIR, Joey Logano clearly likes the one-mile oval. He has never finished outside the top 10 in six career starts at the track and has finished sixth or better in three straight starts. Logano’s 6.2 average finish at Phoenix is the best among drivers entered in this weekend’s event, and it could finally be his time to close the deal and get to Victory Lane in the desert.
Coming off a career-best second-place finish in his last start at Phoenix, Brad Keselowski could be primed for his first-ever win at the track this weekend. After his runner-up performance last fall, he now has five top-five finishes in his last six starts at the track. If he continues to run near the front, it is only a matter of time before he finds a way to get to Victory Lane. There is no reason it couldn’t happen as soon as Saturday.
Sleeper Specials – 2012 Bashas Supermarket 200 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
After his surprising victory at PIR last fall, it is tough to count out Sam Hornish Jr. this weekend. He led 61 laps in his win, leaving no doubt that he had a strong car. More importantly, his Penske Racing team finished 1-2 in the event, meaning the organization has some pretty good data to work with. Even if other teams have closed the gap, Hornish still looks like a solid be a contender once again.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has exceled at Phoenix since joining the Nationwide Series. The defending series champ has four top-10 finishes in four career starts, finishing a career-best fifth last fall. In the fall event, Stenhouse also led a race-high 73 laps. If he continues to improve at his current pace, a victory seems inevitable in the near future.
Driver to Avoid – 2012 Bashas Supermarket 200 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
For whatever reason, Kasey Kahne has never been as successful in the Nationwide Series as he has at the Cup level. Phoenix has been no exception. He has finished outside the top 10 in four of his five starts at the track, compiling an 18.0 average finish. Kahne is a big name in NASCAR, but he probably won’t deliver big results this weekend.
When Elliott Sadler looks at reasons why he didn’t won the title last season, he can look at Phoenix. He finished outside the top 10 in both starts at the track, giving him five finishes outside the top 10 in his last six starts. Sadler has never had a feel for the one-mile oval, and there are no signs of that changing any time soon.
