For starters, the sessions are held under track conditions that are very similar to race day. Drivers also run a ton of laps, providing plenty of data to analyze. Bettors have to love the added level of predictability when it comes time to making their picks.

2011 Pure Michigan 400 – Post-Practice Top 5

  1. Greg Biffle: Biffle ranked third and fourth in the two practice sessions, and he won the pole for Sunday’s race. He is a two-time winner at Michigan, and he has led the most laps in each of the last two races at the track. Biffle has struggled overall in 2011, but he looks primed to deliver in a big way at one of his best tracks.

  1. Kyle Busch: After ranking 11th in the practice session Friday, Busch climbed to second in Happy Hour Saturday. He also added the second-best 10-lap average speed in the final session. Busch finished third at Michigan in June, and he has been on a roll the past few months. He leads the series in top-five finishes and is tied for the most wins. Expect another strong performance from Busch.

  1. Matt Kenseth: When Kenseth starts up front, he is almost always a factor for the win, and he qualified second for Sunday’s race. He also topped the charts in the opening practice and ranked seventh in Happy Hour. Kenseth has two wins at Michigan in his career and finished second at the track in June. He should be in the mix for the win once again.

  1. Jeff Gordon: Gordon has become a consistent top-five threat over the last month and a half, and that should continue this weekend. He ranked second in the first practice of the weekend and jumped to fifth on the charts in Happy Hour. Gordon has already snapped long winless droughts at Phoenix and Pocono this season, and he could do the same at Michigan Sunday.

  1. Mark Martin: He ranked a strong fourth in the first practice at Michigan Friday, and he posted the fastest lap in Happy Hour. Martin has had a miserable year, but he has won at MIS as recently as 2009. This is by far the best he has looked on the practice charts in several months, and the veteran may have one more win left in him after all.

2011 Pure Michigan 400 – Post-Practice Top Sleeper

  1. David Ragan: The 2.0-mile tracks have always been among Ragan’s best, and he showed during the practice sessions. He ranked fifth in Friday’s practice and ninth in Happy Hour. Ragan has never won at MIS, but all three of his Roush Fenway Racing teammates have at least two wins at the track. It could be Ragan’s turn to reach Victory Lane.

  1. Paul Menard: Menard ranked sixth and 10th in the two practice sessions, and he also posted the best 10-lap average speed in Happy Hour. He is also coming off a career-best fourth-place finish at MIS in June. Menard found a setup he liked at the track earlier this year, and he appears to have just as much speed this time around. After pulling the upset at Indianapolis, Menard could be ready to return to Victory Lane.
