2011 IRWIN Tools Night Race – Post-Practice Predictions and Top 5 Drivers

2011 IRWIN Tools Night Race Post-Practice Predictions, Picks, Tips and Preview – Favorites and Sleepers to Win IRWIN Tools Night Race: Before the progressive banking was added to Bristol, the track was more about bumping, banging and surviving than actual speed. That has since changed, making practice sessions at the track more valuable than they have ever before. Making a car handle comfortably on long runs is especially important because fuel runs span more than 100 laps at the half-mile lap.

2011 IRWIN Tools Night Race – Post-Practice Top 5

  1. Carl Edwards: Edwards found plenty of speed throughout both practice sessions Friday. In fact, he topped the charts in both. He also added the fifth-best 10-lap average speed in the first practice. Edwards finished second at Bristol in March, and he is a two-time winner in the night race. He looks like a great candidate to get to Victory Lane.

  1. Matt Kenseth: He showed a lot of balance in practice Friday. Kenseth posted the third-fastest lap in the opening session, along with the seventh-best 10-lap average speed. He also posted the third-best 10-lap average speed in Happy Hour. Kenseth is a two-time winner at Bristol, and after a fourth-place finish at the track in March, he could be ready to cash in this weekend.

  1. Jimmie Johnson: Although he recorded the ninth-fastest lap in Happy Hour, Johnson’s strength appears to be on the longer runs. He had the third-best 10-lap average speed in the first practice and the second-best 10-lap average in Happy Hour. Johnson has finished third or better in three of his last five starts at Bristol, including a third-place run earlier this year. Last August, he had the car to beat before getting wrecked. Johnson will look to close the deal this weekend.

  1. Mark Martin: After posting the second-fastest lap in the first practice, Martin showed his long run strength in Happy Hour by recording the best 10-lap average speed. He has been relatively quiet in 2011, but he did have a solid run last weekend at Michigan. The momentum appears to have carried over, and considering he finished sixth and second at Bristol in 2009, he could make some noise this weekend.

  1. Brad Keselowski: Keselowski flexed plenty of muscle in the two practices, posting the fourth and fifth-fastest laps. He also topped the charts in terms of 10-lap average speed in the opening session. The last month has been a dream come true for Keselowski, and he will be looking for his fourth straight top-three finish this weekend. At this point, he seems unstoppable.

2011 IRWIN Tools Night Race – Post-Practice Top Sleeper

  1. Paul Menard: Menard was lurking just outside the top of the leaderboard throughout both practices. He posted the 11th and eighth-fastest laps, along with the sixth and 12th-best 10-lap average speeds. Menard’s car has nice balance, and after a fifth-place finish at Bristol in March, he is more than capable of pulling an upset.
