Ambrose is an excellent road racer, he has fast car, and he could add his name to the list of first-time winners this in 2011 this weekend.
- Kurt Busch: Busch roared up the charts in Happy Hour, posting the second-fastest lap when all was said and done. He has been excelling at the road courses in recent years, finishing in the top 10 in his last three starts at The Glen and winning at Infineon earlier this season. Busch finished second at Watkins Glen in 2010, and he could complete a road course sweep in 2011 with a win this weekend.
- Juan Pablo Montoya: Montoya made it clear early on in the practice sessions Friday that he has every intention of defending his win from last season, posting the second-fastest lap in the first practice. He has finished sixth or better in his last three starts at Watkins Glen, including his victory one year ago. Both of Montoya’s Cup wins have come at road courses, and he could make a third trip to Victory Lane this weekend.
- Kyle Busch: He got off to a quick start in practice, topping the charts in the opening session. Busch has been a consistent top-10 finisher at Watkins Glen, and he has been even better lately. He won at the track in 2008 and finished fourth in 2009. Busch should be in the mix when it counts this weekend.
- A.J. Allmendinger: Allmendinger made a statement run at Watkins Glen last season, and based on the practice times, he appears ready to do it again this weekend. He posted the third-fastest lap in the first session Friday and ranked 12th in Happy Hour. Allmendinger started and finished in the top five at The Glen last season, and he is more than capable of taking the next step this weekend.
Post-Practice Top Sleeper
- Brad Keselowski: The good news for bettors is that Keselowski ranked in the top five in both practice sessions Friday. The bad news is that he is racing on a broken ankle at a track that requires a lot of braking and footwork. Keselowski showed last weekend at Pocono he can still win despite the injury, but a road course like Watkins Glen is a tougher test. Still, he appears to have a car capable of getting the job done if he can hold up physically.
- Andy Lally: He is the longshot of the bunch, but the lifelong road racer ranked in the top 15 in both practice sessions Friday. He has improved in both of his Cup starts at Watkins Glen, and he finished in the top 20 last season. Lally still has to make a sizeable jump in order to win, but the payoff would be nice if he does.
