This weekend’s Cup race at Richmond International Raceway will be held Saturday night, which means drivers and teams will have to adjust their setups throughout the course of the race to deal with eve-cooling track temperatures. As a result, bettors need to look at the drivers that showed consistency on long runs during the practice sessions when trying to determine who to put their money on. Typically, drivers that run well over the course of several laps have an easier time adjusting their cars, and that is what it takes to win at Richmond.
Post-Practice Top 5
- Clint Bowyer: He posted top-five times in both practices Friday, and averages a top-10 finish at Richmond for his career. Bowyer has been on the doorstep of a win the last two races this season, and he is a former winner at Richmond. This could be his weekend to cash in, and bettors should try to do the same.
- Carl Edwards: Edwards posted top-five speed in both practice sessions at Richmond Friday, and more importantly, he posted the top overall average speed. Although he has just three top-10 finishes in 13 starts at Richmond, Edwards could end up being the winning pick. He finished a career-best fifth at the track last fall, and the No. 99 Ford is running well this weekend.
- Kevin Harvick: He came to life during Happy Hour, posting the second-fastest lap and the seventh best 10-lap average speed. In addition, he managed to second-best overall average speed between the two practices. Harvick is a former winner at Richmond and currently leads the series in wins in 2011. He could easily add another win to his resume Saturday night.
- Kyle Busch: Busch recorded the sixth-fastest lap in the opening session, and for the two practices as a whole, he had the fourth-best average speed. He has dominated Richmond since joining the series, and he is the defending winner of this weekend’s race. Busch averages a top-five finish at the track, and he has a fast enough car to better that already impressive mark.
- Juan Pablo Montoya: After showing some muscle on long runs in the first practice, Montoya posted the fastest lap in Happy Hour. He followed it up by winning the pole for the race as well. He is one of the up and coming short track drivers in the series, and after a pair of top-10 finishes at Richmond last season, Montoya is primed for a breakthrough performance.
Post-Practice Top Sleeper
- Regan Smith: He hasn’t done a whole lot at the track during his career, but Smith was consistently at the top of the charts during practice Friday. He posted the top 10-lap average speed in the first session, and he put down the fourth-fastest lap in final practice. Smith is starting on the outside of the front row Saturday night, and if he continues to defy his career numbers, bettors could be looking at a huge pay day.
