2011 Brickyard 400 Post-Practice Predictions, Picks, Tips and Preview – Favorites and Sleepers to Win Brickyard 400: With a chance to kiss the bricks on the line, the Cup Series teams were no doubt extra focused for every lap of practice at Indianapolis this weekend. Not to mention the fact that a good handling car is a must, especially in the flat corners of the 2.5-mile tracks. Indy’s long straightaways often lead to misconception that horsepower is what wins. However, the cars that can handle through to turns and carry momentum back onto to the straightaways actually have the advantage.
2011 Brickyard 400 – Post-Practice Top 5
- Greg Biffle: He left little doubt that he had one of the cars to beat this weekend as he topped the final two practices of the weekend. Biffle has finished eighth, fourth and third in his last three starts at the Brickyard, and it appears he has a car capable of improving on those already impressive numbers. His first win of 2011 could come Sunday.
- Jimmie Johnson: Johnson was consistent throughout the final two sessions of the weekend, ranking third in the final practice Friday and 10th in Happy Hour Saturday. He is a three-time winner at the Brickyard with all three wins coming in his last five starts. If he kisses the bricks for a fourth time this weekend, he will tie his teammate Jeff Gordon for the most wins in track history.
- Carl Edwards: After posting the sixth-fastest lap in Friday’s late session, Edwards put down the fifth-best lap in Happy Hour Saturday. He has finished as high as second at Indy, but he has never been able to get over the hump and win. Based on the practice time, it could be Edwards’ turn to kiss the bricks this weekend.
- Kevin Harvick: Harvick was consistent throughout the weekend practices, ranking fifth in the Friday afternoon session and 11th in Saturday’s lone practice. He is a former winner at the Brickyard and was runner-up last season. Harvick has a way of winning the big races, and he will look to add a second Indy win to a resume that includes the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600 and the All-Star Race.
- Matt Kenseth: After leading the first practice session Friday morning, Kenseth showed he was for real with the eighth-fastest lap in Happy Hour Saturday. He has been close to a Brickyard win on multiple occasions, finishing third or better three times. Twice Kenseth has been runner-up, and he will be focused on finally closing the deal and kissing the bricks.
2011 Brickyard 400 – Post-Practice Top Sleeper
- Brian Vickers: It has been a miserable year for Vickers, but an Indy victory would immediately erase all the disappointment and possibly save his job. He appears to have a car at least capable of pulling an upset as he ranked in the top 10 in both the late session Friday and Happy Hour Saturday. Vickers also finished fifth in his most recent start at the Brickyard. Granted, he missed last year’s race due to an illness, but he does have a history of solid run at the track.
