Sale comes into this game as arguably the front runner for the AL Cy Young Award as he has been brilliant in his first season as a Red Sox. Sale has only allowed 134 hits in 185.1 innings pitched this season and has a league leading 264 strikeouts to go with only 35 bases on balls. Teams are only hitting .197 against the 28 year-old lefty.
Sale is coming off of an impressive outing in his last start at Toronto. The lefty picked up the win as he went 7 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 0 earned runs in the 3-0 Red Sox win.
New York Yankees enter tonight’s pivotal game against their top rivals with an overall record of 72-63 as we head into the downs stretch of the AL East Division race. The Yankees need to win this game and bring the Red Sox lead to just 3.5 games as a loss will drop the Yankees 5.5 games back with less than a month to go. That’s hard to overcome.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi will hand the ball to right-hander Luis Severino(11-6, 3.14 ERA) tonight for the Bronx bombers. The 23 year-old ace has been great for the pinstripes this season as he’s pitched 163.1 innings, allowed 135 hits and struck out 192 to go against just 45 bases on balls. Severino is clearly the ace of the future for the Yankees and should be a dominant arm in the rotation for many years to come.
We like the Red Sox to get the series split and the win tonight behind Sale. Severino is no slouch and can match Sale tonight but we give the edge to Sale as he’s been the best pitcher in the AL this season and there are few pitchers out there that perform better in the big games.
