Free MLB Picks and Odds: Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers Favorite, Moneyline, Total and Predictions 5/2/11: The Chicago Cubs are off to another mediocre start and hopes are dwindling for this club to make something of themselves this season. At times they have flashed some brilliance and precision, but others have seen them fold under pressure moments. It is the inconsistencies that have plagued this team for the last ten years, and 80 years arguably. Without a doubt the Chicago Cubs have the talent and coaching in place to win in this league, they have yet to assemble that talent in a way that can effectively produce on a daily basis. James Russell will be handed the ball for the Cubs tonight in the opening affair between the Cubs and Dodgers. The young stout has been extremely shaky thus far and with another poor performance tonight we might see him optioned back to AAA tomorrow. He has pitched 13 innings this season and has a despicable ERA of 8.31. The knock on Russell is that he starts slow and gets better late, it will be imperative for him to earn a few strike outs early and build on that momentum.
Andre Ethier keeps on chugging. The right-fielder now has a streak of 27 games with a hit after his infield single last night. It is too bad that his contributions cannot be matched on this Dodgers club, they are a sub .500 club at the present moment and are in the bottom half in scoring in the league. They are currently in the midst of a two game losing streak which commenced this past weekend against the Padres. The weekend series against the Pads’ saw them cough up 14 runs and 3 errors, stats that should never follow and professional baseball club. Tonight the Dodgers will send ace Clayton Kershaw to the mound to commence the early week series with the windy city Cubs. On the season, Kershaw has a 3.52 ERA through 38.1 innings of work to go along with his 2-3 record. About the only thing consistent that goes along with the Dodgers these days is the production of Clayton Kershaw. His base on balls average is one of the tops in the league and he is pitching deep into games, quite an asset for a club with a questionable bull-pen. He gives the Dodgers a legitimate shot of victory every time he takes the mound, it is unfortunate that he has one of the lowest run support averages in the entire league.
Tonight we will recommend a play on the Cubs in the opening game of their three game set with the Dodgers. The Chicago Cubs are coming off of a successful series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, a series in which saw them take big strides as a ball club. They were flawless defensively in all four outings and they finally received solid outing from all four starts on the mound. The Dodgers are in a funk right now and I do not believe they are ready to break out of it just yet. They are sending their ace in Kershaw to the mound but the Cubbies have shown a tendency to excel when lining up against big time hurlers. LA Dodgers are 2-4 SU in their last 6 games and are 2-7 SU in their last 9 games when playing at home against Chi Cubs. We will consider the Chicago Cubs keeping up the streak of solid contributions from all over the field and breaking in the three game set with a hard earned victory tonight. Cheers!
