2020 NL MVP Odds & Who to Bet On: Sleepers to Win the National League MVP Award
Freddie Freeman, 1B, Atlanta Braves (25/1)
Freeman has been more steady than spectacular over the course of his career, but he did finish eighth in the MVP voting last year after setting career highs with 113 runs scored, 38 home runs and 121 RBIs. With plenty of young talent around him, the potential for Freeman to continue to pile up gawdy offensive numbers is certainly there, and the Braves should be in the mix for a playoff spot. The question is whether or not last year’s numbers were Freeman’s ceiling or if he can push them a bit higher. At 25/1 odds, you may want to take a flier on Freeman and hope for the latter.
Pete Alonso, 1B, New York Mets (40/1)
Not only did Pete Alonso take home Rookie of the Year honors in 2019, but he set a rookie record and led the majors with 53 home runs. He also finished third in the National League with 120 RBIs, adding 103 runs scored and a .941 OPS. His power outburst was enough to garner a seventh-place finish in the MVP voting. With just a one-year sample size, it is more than fair to question if Alonso can even approach the numbers from his rookie campaign, let alone improve on any of them. On the flip side, Alonso and the Mets surprised a lot of people last year, and 40/1 odds on a guy who blasted 50-plus bombs the first time he stepped foot in the majors, don’t seem like a bad deal. If you like trying to hit it big on sleepers, he is a must-bet for NL MVP honors.
Ketel Marte, 2B, Arizona Diamondbacks (60/1)
After a couple of pedestrian seasons to begin his career, Marte exploded in 2019, posting career highs in just about every statistical category. He finished the year with tied for the NL lead with a .329 average, adding 32 homers, 92 RBIs and 97 runs scored. Marte also finished fourth in the NL with a .981 OPS and third with a 6.9 WAR, which propelled him to a fourth-place finish in the MVP voting. Entering what will really be just his third full-time season, it stands to reason that Marte’s best days are still ahead of him. Playing in a hitter-friendly park for an Arizona squad that overachieved a year ago, he should be headed for another strong stat line if the season gets rolling. Plus, you have to like 60/1 odds on player who finished in the top five in the MVP voting a year ago.
