2020 NL MVP Odds: Favorites & Value Bets to Win the National League MVP Award: The 2020 MLB season will be here before you know it, and while spring training rolls on, it is time to start looking at futures bets. Betting on the eventual MVP winner in both leagues is always a popular option, and while I’ll be previewing the top bets and potential sleepers for the award in both leagues, I am going to start in the National League.
Unlike in the American League where Mike Trout has basically had a stranglehold on things, there have been a variety of winners in the NL the last several years. On top of that, many of the winners are just entering what is likely the prime of their careers, so the competition could be fierce.
I think you may want to spread out your bets a little bit when trying to nail to National League Most Valuable Player this year, and I’ve highlighted my top options among the current betting favorites.
The Favorites
Ronald Acuna Jr., OF, Atlanta Braves (4/1)
In his first full season, Acuna piled up an impressive stat line that included a .280 batting average, 41 home runs and 101 RBI. Acuna also led the National League with 127 runs scored and 37 stolen bases, ranking in the top 10 with a 5.5 WAR. He ended up finishing fifth in the MVP voting, and considering he will be just 22 years old in 2020, it is safe to say the best is yet to come.
Mookie Betts, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers (5/1)
He was unable to back up his MVP-winning numbers from 2018, but Betts still posted a strong line last year. He hit .295 with 29 homers and 80 RBI, and his 6.8 WAR ranked fifth in the American League. He also led the AL in runs scored for the second year in a row, scoring 135 times. Betts makes the move to the NL in 2020, but dropping one of the best hitters in the game near the top of a loaded lineup for a team with World Series aspirations seems like a recipe for success. Not to mention that he is one of the safest bets on the board. Betts has finished eighth or better in the MVP voting in each of the last four seasons, adding a runner-up effort to his 2018 award.
Value Bets
Christian Yelich, OF, Milwaukee Brewers (8/1)
The 2018 MVP appeared to be headed for some more hardware last year, but he settled for finishing runner-up for the award after breaking his kneecap late in the season. Despite playing just 130 games, Yelich still finished fourth in the NL with 44 home runs, adding 100 runs scored, 97 RBI and 30 steals. He also took home his second consecutive batting title and led the league in slugging percentage and OPS for the second year in a row, and his 7.1 WAR ranked third. Coming off the injury, Yelich is sitting at 8/1 to take home MVP honors. I’d jump on him at these odds while you can.
Cody Bellinger, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers (12/1)
The defending NL MVP did it all in 2019. Bellinger finished the year with a .305 average, 47 home runs and 115 RBI, ranking seventh or better in all three categories. His 9.0 WAR and 351 total bases were tops on the National League, and he ranked second with 121 runs scored and a 1.035 OPS. The offseason addition of Mookie Betts makes the path to repeating a bit more difficult, but Bellinger is still going to own a prime spot in the middle of what is probably the best lineup in baseball. Still just 24 years old, Bellinger shouldn’t be slowing down any time soon. Another monster offensive season seems inevitable, and I’ll gladly take 12/1 odds on the reigning MVP.
