2013 NL Cy Young Odds and Predictions: Favorites to Win National League Cy Young Award

2013-NL-Cy-Young-Award-Odds-and-Predictions2013 NL Cy Young Odds and Predictions – Vegas Favorites to Win National League Cy Young Award: While pitchers are technically eligible for baseball’s MVP Award, the Cy Young Award has more or less become the de facto MVP for pitchers since it was first handed out in 1967. Looking at the recent National League Cy Young winners, there is a good chance that a first-time winner could be on tap. After all, defending NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey moved to the American League while two-time winner Roy Halladay began to break down in 2012 and fellow two-time winner Tim Lincecum was so bad that he got shipped to the bullpen. Basically, 2011 winner Clayton Kershaw is the only player that could prevent a first-time winner from claiming the honor. Kershaw is among the favorites for the NL Cy Young in 2013, and here is a closer look at the other top contenders.

2013 NL Cy Young Odds and Predictions

The Favorites

A year removed from winning the Cy Young himself, Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw had another strong season in 2012. He actually led the league with a 2.53 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, and he ranked second with a .210 batting average against and 229 strikeouts. His 14-9 record wasn’t indicative of how great he was, but Kershaw’s win total should look a lot better in 2013 thanks to Los Angeles’ rebuilt offense. His stuff is just plain nasty, and a second Cy Young in three years is a real possibility for Kershaw.

He is one of the aces for a Washington team that led the majors in wins in 2012, and Gio Gonzalez is coming off a heck of a year in his own right. His 21 victories and .206 batting average against were both tops in the NL, and he ranked eighth or better in ERA, WHIP and strikeouts, as well. Gonzalez can be a touch wild at times, but he is downright tough to hit, and he only allowed nine home runs last season. Lowering his ERA a touch would certainly help his cause, but Gonzalez probably win the award in 2013 if he can just repeat his numbers from a year ago.

The Dark Horses

After emerging as the ace for the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants, Matt Cain could be in line to collect some personal accolades in 2013. Among NL pitchers last year, he finished fourth in ERA, second in WHIP and third in batting average against and innings pitched. He also tossed a perfect game and posted a 16-5 record. While the perfect game probably won’t happen again, Cain is more than capable of finishing at or near the top in all major statistical categories and being in the mix for Cy Young honors.

Relief pitchers don’t always have the best luck when it comes to winning the Cy Young, but Atlanta Braves’ closer Craig Kimbrel has the nasty stuff to be an exception. He led the National League with 42 saves last year, and his numbers were incredible. He posted a 1.01 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and a .167 batting average against. He also amassed an incredible 116 strikeouts in 62.2 innings while walking only 14 batters. Kimbrel might just have the most dominant stuff in the game right now, and if he remains practically unhittable in 2013, voters are going to have to give him some respect.

Sleeper Special

Although his numbers were mediocre in 2012, St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright should reclaim his ace status and maybe more this year. After all, he missed the entire 2011 season because of an elbow injury, and history says it takes at least two years to fully recover. In the two years prior to his surgery, Wainwright was a stud. He went 19-8 in 2009 with a 2.63 ERA and went 20-11 with a 2.42 ERA in 2010. Those numbers will put a guy in the Cy Young conversation, and Wainwright could approach them in 2013.
