2013 MLB American League MVP Odds and Predictions: Favorites, Dark Horses and Sleepers: When you look at recent winners of the American League MVP Award, you can’t accuse voters of playing favorites. Players from five different positions and four different teams have earned the award the last five seasons, and all five were first-time winners of the award. Throw in fact that the last unanimous selection came way back in 1997 when Ken Griffey Jr. swept the voting, and the award is definitely up for grabs heading into the 2013 MLB season. Defending MVP Miguel Cabrera is certainly among the frontrunners, but there is also a mix of rising stars and established veterans waiting to challenge him. With that in mind, here is a look at the top contenders for AL MVP honors for the upcoming season.
2013 MLB American League MVP Odds and Predictions
The Favorites
All he did last year was win the Triple Crown, and Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera has been putting up massive offensive numbers for years. The Tigers’ first baseman hit .330 with 44 home runs and 139 RBIs last year, and he has approached those numbers in each of the last four seasons. Plain and simple, Cabrera is one of the best overall hitters in the game today. If his bat carries the Tigers to a division title again in 2013, another MVP Award could be headed his way.
Armed with one of the most versatile skill sets of any player in the game, Los Angeles outfielder Mike Trout nearly won the MVP as a rookie last year. He actually led the majors in steals and runs scored despite missing a month of the season, and he also finished with the second-best batting average and hit 30 homers and drove in 83 runs from the leadoff spot. Assuming he avoids a sophomore slump, Trout’s numbers in a full season could be too spectacular for voters to ignore.
The Dark Horses
With Alex Rodriguez out for a long time and guys like Derek Jeter not getting any younger, second baseman Robinson Cano is going to be leaned on even more heavily by the Yankees in 2013. He has hit better than .300, hit more than 40 doubles and scored more than 100 runs in each of the last four years, and he is coming off a season when he belted a career-high 33 homers. Cano is in the middle of his prime, and if he is the driving force of New York’s offense this year, MVP honors aren’t out of the question.
He finished second in the American League in homers and RBIs last year, and Josh Hamilton will now be hitting in the same lineup with Albert Pujols, Mark Trumbo and Mike Trout after signing a massive deal with the Angels in the offseason. Although focus has been an issue for Hamilton at times, his raw talent and upside are undeniable. In a loaded lineup, he has a chance to put up some special numbers and earn the second MVP Award of his career.
Sleeper Special
After being a bust for his entire career, Toronto third baseman Edwin Encarnacion exploded last year to the tune of 42 homers and 110 RBIs. Both totals were good enough for the third-most in the AL, and his 93 runs scored were also a career high. More importantly, the Blue Jays loaded up in the offseason to make a run at the AL East title, giving Encarnacion more protection and more opportunities to drive in runs in the process. Assuming last season’s numbers were a sign of things to come and not a blip on the radar, the former disappointment could end up winning himself MVP honors.
