2013 AL Cy Young Odds and Predictions – Vegas Favorites to Win American League Cy Young Award: There was a five-year stretch in the American League when Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez dominated the Cy Young Award. However, things have changed since then as 10 different pitchers have combined to win the last 11 AL Cy Young Awards. In fact, a different pitcher has earned the honor in each of the past eight seasons. With the last three winners of the AL Cy Young all still in their prime, there is a chance the trend could train in 2013. That being said, there are plenty of other strong contenders looking for their first Cy Young. On that note, here is look at the frontrunners and some potential sleepers for the award in 2013.
2013 AL Cy Young Odds and Predictions
The Favorites
After winning the American League MVP and the Cy Young in 2011, Detroit Tigers’ starter Justin Verlander came up just shy of winning back-to-back Cy Young Awards last year. He finished second in the AL in ERA, WHIP and batting average against and led the majors in innings pitched and complete games. Verlander is a workhorse and an ace all rolled into one, and his arsenal of pitches includes a devastating curveball and a fastball the still reaches triple digits in the ninth inning. Verlander has a chance to collect a cabinet full of Cy Young trophies when all is said and done.
Had injuries not limited him to just 188.2 innings last year, Jered Weaver might have won the Cy Young in 2012. The Los Angeles Angels’ ace tied for the AL lead with 20 wins, and his .214 batting average against and 1.02 WHIP were both the best in the league. Weaver also added three complete games and two shutouts to go along with the AL’s third-best ERA. As the numbers suggest, he is as tough to hit as any pitcher around. If Weaver can make the three or four extra starts that push him over the 200-inning mark and maintain his elite numbers, a Cy Young could be headed his way in 2013.
The Dark Horses
Former No. 1 overall pick David Price took home the American League Cy Young Award last year, and while it remains to be seen if the Tampa Bay ace can repeat the numbers, he certainly deserves to be in the conversation. After all, Price led the AL with a 2.56 ERA and was tied for the league lead with 20 wins. He also ranked third in WHIP and fourth in batting average against. He will be entering just his fifth full season in the majors in 2013 so there is a chance his numbers could slip a bit as opponents adjust. However, there is also a chance that Price’s best years are still to come.
If defending National League Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey is going to repeat in 2013, the knuckleballer will have to do it in the American League after landing with the Toronto Blue Jays in the offseason. As a member of the New York Mets last year, Dickey led the league in strikeouts, innings pitched, complete games and shutouts and finished fourth or better in wins, ERA, WHIP and batting average against. Moving to the more offensive-minded AL could take a toll on his numbers, but playing his home games indoors could help the consistency of his devastating knuckleball. At the very least, Dickey deserves the benefit of the doubt after dominating NL hitters last year.
Sleeper Special
In 2010, Felix Hernandez won the American League Cy Young Award despite winning just 13 games. Given the lack of talent on the Seattle Mariners in 2013, he may have to follow a similar path to win the award a second time. Of course, he has the stuff to do pull it off, and the workhorse is coming off a year when he finished in the top five in the league, ERA, WHIP and strikeouts. Hernandez also led all of baseball with five shutouts last year. It isn’t exactly easy to dominate on the mound when run support is hard to come by, but Hernandez overcame the odds once already to win a Cy Young, and he could do it again.
