2012 World Series MVP Odds and Picks: Favorites, Dark Horses and Sleepers to win the World Series MVP Award: With the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants set to begin the 2012 World Series Wednesday night, it’s time to take a look at which players could end up taking home this year’s World Series MVP. Both pitchers and position players have won their fair share of awards, and while big names have also claimed the honor on many occasions, there have been plenty of surprise winners. Even in recent years, David Freese, Hideki Matsui, Mike Lowell and David Eckstein have been named MVP. That being said, there is one constant when it comes to winning the award. Since the award’s inception in 1955, there has been only one player to be named MVP for a losing team. Bobby Richardson accomplished the feat way back in 1960 when he drove in a series-record 12 runs in a losing effort. With that in mind, here is a look at a few players that could take home this year’s World Series MVP.
2012 MLB World Series MVP Odds and Predictions
The Favorites
In three starts this postseason, Detroit’s Justin Verlander is 3-0 with a 0.74 ERA. He has struck out 25 batters over those three starts while compiling a miniscule .122 batting average against. Not to mention that he has pitched at least seven innings in all three starts, including a complete game shutout. Plain and simple, Verlander is a workhorse and a stud. He will start Game 1 for the Tigers, and with at least two starts on tap in the World Series, he could get Detroit halfway to a championship pretty much on his own. If he stays perfect and the Tigers win the series, Verlander could be adding a World Series MVP to his resume.
He just won baseball’s first Triple Crown since 1967, and Miguel Cabrera is the type of hitter that can take over a series. He is arguably the smartest hitter in the game when it comes to driving in runs, and he rarely misses an opportunity with runners in scoring position. With left-hander Barry Zito starting Game 1 for San Francisco, Cabrera could get off to a monster start and never look back. If he piles up some impressive offensive numbers and Detroit wins the series, he will be the natural choice for MVP.
The one constant for the San Francisco offense all season has been catcher Buster Posey. He won the National League batting title and led the Giants in average, home runs and RBIs. In fact, he hit twice as many homers as the next closest player on the team. With a grand slam in Game 5 of the divisional round already under his belt, Posey has already shown he can deliver in clutch situations this postseason. If he continues to be San Francisco’s best offensive weapon and the Giants win the World Series, Posey will be the obvious choice for MVP.
The Dark Horses
There is a good chance San Francisco will make the decision to not let Miguel Cabrera beat them in this series, and as result, Prince Fielder could have plenty of RBI opportunities coming his way. During the regular season he hit .313 with 30 home runs and 108 RBIs. He has been very quiet in the playoffs thus far, but if his bat catches fire, he could make San Francisco pay for pitching around Cabrera to the tune of a World Series MVP.
Although he can be a free-swinging, streaky hitter, Pablo Sandoval has been dialed in at the perfect time for San Francisco during the postseason. He finished the St. Louis series by driving in at least one run in each of the final five games, and he has three homers and a .320 average during the postseason. If Sandoval’s bat stays hot against Detroit, he can pile up more than enough hits and RBIs to help San Francisco win the World Series and to help himself win the MVP.
The Sleeper
Apparently, San Francisco infielder Marco Scutaro saves his best work for the postseason. He has been on an absolute tear at the plate, and he brings a 10-game hitting streak and a .354 postseason average into the World Series. More impressively, Scutaro is coming off a record-setting performance in the NLCS that saw him record six multi-hit games in the seven-game series with the Cardinals. He isn’t the biggest name by any means, but if he continues to pile up hit after hit, he is going to be hard to ignore when it comes time to name a World Series MVP.
While he may be a perennial underachiever during the regular season, Detroit outfielder Delmon Young has been delivering in the playoffs. The Tigers have played nine games thus far, and he has eight RBIs. Not to mention that fact that he has had at least one RBI in five straight playoff games, including the game-winning RBI in all four ALCS games against the Yankees. For the record, no player has ever done that before. If Young continues to be a steady run producer and continues to deliver in the clutch, he will have no problem grabbing the MVP.
