Not only are the Sooners undefeated this season as they continue to pursue a national title, but they have won 39 straight games at Owen Field. For the record, the streak is currently the longest in the nation, and if the Red Raiders can somehow pull off an upset, it would go down as one of biggest in recent memory. However, Texas Tech is facing an uphill battle against an Oklahoma team that is favored by 28 ½ points.

Two of the most prolific quarterbacks in the country will be on display in this matchup as Oklahoma’s Landry Jones faces Texas Tech’s Seth Doege. Doege currently ranks fourth in the nation in passing yards per game, while Jones ranks third. Both QBs are averaging well over 350 yards a contest through the air. Jones and Doege run two of the most effective spread attacks in the collegiate game today, although Jones and the Sooners like to feature the deep ball more frequently than the Red Raiders’ air attack. That being said, both secondaries can expect plenty of action in this one.

While each team can boast an excellent quarterback, the edge in star power at wide receiver definitely goes to Oklahoma. Ryan Broyles is already one of the best receivers in conference history, and he still has time to pad his numbers. Meanwhile, Kenny Stills has repeatedly made defenses pay for double teaming Broyles. The duo could prove too much for a Texas Tech defense that has given up 30-plus points in four straight games to handle.

The struggles on defense for the Red Raiders the last few weeks are nothing new. Texas Tech has been trying to outscore opponents for years, and while the Red Raiders have put plenty of points on the board, they have allowed their share as well. Despite scoring 34 or more points in the last four games, Texas Tech is just 2-2 during the stretch because it has given up 34 or more points in each game as well. The Red Raiders have also surrendered more than 40 points in their losses to Texas A&M and Kansas State. Considering that the Oklahoma offense will be the best that Texas tech has faced thus far, the potential for a disaster is definitely there.

An even bigger issue could be the fact that the Sooners’ defense is going to be the best that Texas Tech has faced this season. Bob Stoops’ bunch ranks 10th in the country in terms of points allowed, giving up just over 15 a game. Oklahoma has been particularly effective at putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks, which could disrupt the short passing game of Texas Tech. If the Red Raiders can’t move the ball through the air, this game could get ugly in a hurry.

In the end, Jones and company will likely prove too much for the Texas Tech defense to handle. The Sooners simply have too much talent and firepower on offense for the Red Raiders to contain. More importantly, the stout Oklahoma defense should have no trouble causing problems for Doege and company. After all, this is essentially the same unit that held the Red Raiders to just a single touchdown in Oklahoma’s 45-7 win last season. It should be a similar blowout this time around.
