Below you will find our expert 2019 college football predictions on who our top handicappers like as a consensus to make the 2019 College Football Playoff this season. These are the four top college football teams in the country this season in our opinion and will be the last four standing when the dust settles after the regular season.
2020 College Football Playoff Odds & Predictions – 4 Teams Who Will Make Playoff
1. Alabama Crimson Tide(+225 odds to win National Championship) – Bama went 14-1 overall last season and won the SEC Championship Game 35-28 over Georgia. However, the only result that mattered was the 44-16 blowout loss to Clemson in the National Championship Game. It wasn’t the fact that they lost that was so shocking but it was the way it lost. We have never witnessed a Nick Saban team get worked like that since he arrived in Tusacaloosa 13 years ago. However, make no mistake, it will most likely be the last time Saban gets embarrassed like that again while he patrols the Bama sideline.
Junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is back to run the Crimson Tide offense in 2019. Tua has +350 preseason odds to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy and with good reason. He had an amazing 199.5 efficiency rating last season while completing 69 percent of his throws and tossed 43 touchdowns. He threw for 3966 yards and was simply a one man wrecking crew. Look for the Bama offense to once again be among the nation’s best while the defense will be more consistent and disciplined than last year’s unit. This Bama team will once again be in the College Football Playoff Semifinals at minimum.
2. Clemson Tigers(+225 odds to win National Championship) – The Clemson Tigers finished 15-0 overall last season including a 44-16 beatdown over Alabama in the National Championship Game. The win gave Clemson their 3rd National Championship in school history and the 2nd in the last three years. Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney enters his 12th season as the man in charge in Clemson with an impressive 116-30 career record. Alabama head coach Nick Saban is the only other head coach in the nation that we would put ahead of Swinney but that’s arguable as Swinney is now 2-1 in National Title Games against Saban.
Sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence is back to run an explosive Clemson offense that averaged 44.4 points per game last season. Everyone remembers how dominant Lawrence was against Alabama but the scary thing is he can be much better overall this season. He finished with a 157.6 passer efficiency rating last season, completed 65.2 percent of his passes, passed for 3280 yards and threw for 30 touchdowns. Lawrence is the +300 favorite in thepreseason 2019 Heisman Trophy Odds. The one area of concern for Clemson this season is their defense. They lost a boatload of talent to the NFL and return just 4 starters. If anything will prevent them from repeating as National Champs it’s the inexperience on defense.
3. Georgia Bulldogs(+650 odds to win National Championship) – The Bulldogs finished 11-3 overall last season including 7-1 in the SEC regular season to win the SEC East Division. However, Georgia lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game 35-28 and were snubbed the selection committee for the College Football Playoff. The Bulldogs got screwed and went on to play uninspired football against Texas in the Sugar Bowl where they lost 28-21. Make no mistake about it, Georgia was not motivated to be playing in the Sugar Bowl as they rightfully felt there should have been competing for a National Title in the College Football Playoff.
Head coach Kirby Smart once again has a loaded roster to work with this season. Junior quarterback Jake Fromm is back for what most likely will be his final season. The future NFL 1st round pick threw for 2749 yards and 30 touchdowns last season while completing 67.3 percent of his passes. He finished with a strong 171.2 passer efficiency rating. Fromm is a stud and he should once again lead a humming Bulldogs offense that averaged 37.9 ppg last year. Meanwhile, the defense should once again be amongst the nation’s best. It welcomes back 7 starters from a stout unit that allowed just 19.2 ppg and 314.3 ypg last season.
4. Oklahoma Sooners(+1400 odds to win National Championship) – The Sooners finished 12-2 overall last season including a 39-27 win over Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game. However, OU once again lost in the College Football Playoff semifinals when they lost 45-34 to Alabama. Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley is an impressive 24-4 overall after two seasons at the helm in Norman and he’s produced the last two Heisman Trophy winners along with the top overall picks in the last two NFL Drafts with quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. Can you say, recruiting GOLD? Riley will have quarterbacks salivating to go to Oklahoma and run his offense for years with that on his resume.
Oklahoma will have to break in a new quarterback this season but it’s one already with plenty of experience. It is former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts who transferred to OU as a graduate transfer after finishing up his eligibility at Alabama. Hurts is more than capable of keeping the OU offense a high octane unit but he is a step down from Mayfield and Murray if we are being honest. However, his production will still be more than good enough to get the Sooners back in the College Football Playoff in our opinion. The real key for the Sooners in 2019 will be their defense. It should be much improved with 10 starters back from last year’s unit that was a work in progress. It won’t be an elite defense but it will be much better than the unit that allowed 33.3 ppg and 453.8 ypg last season.
