2019 Mountain West “Mountain Division” Prediction
1. Boise State Broncos(+110 odds to win MWC) – The Broncos went 10-3 overall last season but did not end the season on a high note. They lost the MWC Championship Game 19-16 to Fresno State in overtime and then had their bowl game cancelled due to weather vs Boston College. Head coach Bryan Harsin welcomes back 13 starters this season and are clearly the favorite to win the 2019 MWC Title. Harsin is 52-15 at Boise State heading into his 6th season and is a very good coach. He will have to break in a new quarterback this season with sophomore Chase Cord looking to be the top option. The Broncos offense finished 20th in the nation last season averaging 35.4 ppg. QB Brett Rypien(30 TDs, 7 INTS) is gone and so is top rusher Alexander Mattison(1415 yards, 17 TDs). However, plenty of talent returns and Boise State should have no problem putting up points this season. Defensively, the Broncos will be stout with 7 starters returning that allowed 20 points or less in 8 games last season. The unit is led by junior DE/OLB Curtis Weaver who had 15 tackles for losses including 9.5 sacks last season.

Head coach Jeff Tedford has done a remarkable job as Bulldogs head coach with a 22-6 overall record after two seasons. Tedford welcomes back 9 starters this season and should get the team back to it’s 3rd straight bowl game. Fresno State beat Arizona State 31-20 in last year’s Las Vegas Bowl to wrap up the season in style. The Bulldogs only return 3 starters on offense and probably won’t match last year’s high powered attack. The offense posted 34.6 ppg last year to finish 26th in the nation. They will have to break in a new quarterback this season as the starter with senior Jorge Reyna the favorite to win the job. Defensivly, the Bulldogs welcome back 6 starters from an outstanding unit that did not allow more than 27 points in any game. The Bulldogs defense is top notch and is the reason why we like them to win the West Division and why it won’t shock us to see them repeat as MWC Champs. The defense is that good.
