Whether it is a running back from a great team with huge numbers or a quarterback from non-traditional power who has a big game on a big stage, new contenders can emerge. D’Eriq King, QB, Houston Cougars (+2900)
The dual-threat quarterback put up huge numbers last year in his first season as the starter, finishing just shy of 3,000 passing yards while tossing 36 scores to just six interceptions. King added over 600 rushing yards and 14 more scores on the ground. There aren’t many players in the country who can account for 50 touchdowns in a season, and King did it in his first opportunity to lead the Houston offense. Another monster statistical season seems like a given, and he has a potential showcase game against Oklahoma to open the season that could jumpstart a legit Heisman push. If King can keep the Cougars competitive, he will have a puncher’s chance to earn a seat in New York.
Najee Harris, RB, Alabama Crimson Tide (+3600)
While quarterbacks have had a stranglehold on the Heisman, Mark Ingram broke through to win in 2009 and Derrick Henry took home the award in 2015. What do those players have in common? They were both the lead backs in Alabama power rushing attack. After running for 783 yards on just 117 carries last year, Harris is expected to headline the Crimson Tide backfield in 2019. Double those carries, and we are talking about 1,500-plus rushing yards and double-digit scores for a team that should be competing for a national title, and those numbers are probably his floor. There’s a lot of value here with Harris at +3600.
Shea Patterson, QB, Michigan Wolverines (+3600)
His numbers last year don’t jump off the page, and Patterson finished with 2,600 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions. However, Patterson has an NFL-caliber arm, and the word on the street is that Michigan is doing away with Jim Harbaugh’s predictable, run-heavy approach in favor of a more up-tempo, spread attack. The new system could allow Patterson’s ability to show through and put up big numbers, and the Wolverines have the pieces to run the table and secure a spot in the College Football Playoff, especially with the coaching and quarterback changes at Ohio State. A quarterback with solid numbers for an undefeated, power conference team will always have a shot at the Heisman.
Sleeper Special
Rondale Moore, WR, Purdue Boilermakers (+5000)
How good was Moore as a freshman? He led the country with 114 catches, logging 1,258 yards and 12 scores. He added 213 rushing yards and two more scores and also chipped in more than 700 return yards. His signature moment came in an upset of Ohio State when he caught 12 passes for 170 yards and two scores, and Moore also caught 11 passes against Auburn in a bowl game. Moore can line up all over the field, and he might the most explosive player in the country. With a year of experience under his belt, Moore could lead the country in almost every receiving category while piling up well over 2,000 total yards. If I am taking a flier on a longshot, it is going to be on Moore.
