2019 Free College Football Picks & Predictions – Top Games for Week 0: Whether you call it Week 0 or an extended Week 1, the important thing is that college football is back. The 2019 season kicks off today when the Miami Hurricanes and No. 8 Florida Gators meet in Orlando. From there, the action really picks up with plenty of games on Thursday and Friday, before the official Week 1 rolls around next Saturday. We will get to Saturday’s slate eventually, but for now, it is time to take a look at some of the best matchups in the days leading up to the official opening weekend of the 2019 College Football season.
Miami Hurricanes vs. No. 8 Florida Gators in Orlando
Two of the top defensive teams in the country will kick off the 2019 College Football season when the Hurricanes and Gators meet in an in-state battle. While both teams are loaded with talent on the defensive side of the ball, the Hurricanes were borderline embarrassing on offense last year. On the flip side, quarterback Feleipe Franks and Lamical Perine are back to lead a Florida offense that hit its stride as the year went on, scoring at least 35 points in each of the final four games, topping 40 points in blowout wins over Florida State and Michigan to close out the season. I expect Miami to be one of the stronger teams in the ACC when all is said, but I don’t think the Hurricanes are a match for the Gators.
Prediction: Florida Gators (-7) Cover the Spread
UCLA Bruins at Cincinnati Bearcats
Cincinnati went across the country and stunned the Bruins to open the 2018 season, controlling the clock and grounding Chip Kelly’s offense in a 26-17 win. Bearcats running back Michael Warren ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns in the win, and UCLA will once again have to deal with the bruising back. However, the Bearcats will have to deal with a Bruins offense that started to get comfortable with Kelly’s up-tempo attack as last season went on, especially running back Joshua Kelley. Kelley was given just six carries against Cincinnati and just five carries the next week against Oklahoma. After that, he was given the keys to the offense, and he topped 120 rushing yards in six of the final nine games, scoring in eight straight to close the year. Kelley is back, the offensive line returns intact, and the receiving corps is loaded. Year 2 of the Chip Kelly era will start with the Bruins returning the favor and beating the Bearcats at home.
Prediction: UCLA Bruins (-3.5) Cover the Spread
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at No. 1 Clemson Tigers
The outcome of this one isn’t in question, but with the Yellow Jackets getting 36.5 points, Clemson isn’t necessarily a lock to cover. The Tigers only won this matchup by 28 points last year (49-21), but quarterback Trevor Lawrence came off the bench in that one and still managed to fire four touchdowns. Lawrence will be under center from the get-go this time around, and this Clemson offense is beyond loaded. Yes, it’s a big number to cover, but I expect the defending national champs to make a statement out of the gate and put a beatdown on Georgia Tech.
Prediction: Clemson Tigers (-36.5) Cover the Spread
No. 14 Utah Utes at BYU Cougars
These teams met last November with Utah winning 35-27 at home. The Cougars actually jumped out to a 20-0 lead in that game before the Utes stormed back, but even though BYU will be the home team this time around, I still expect a similar outcome. For one, Utah was missing its starting running back and quarterback in last year’s meeting. More importantly, the Utes welcome back seven starters from a defense that was already one of best in the country. Utah is better on both sides of the ball, and it will show on the field Thursday.
