2019 College Football Season Forecast: Top Conference Games of 2019: A great out-of-conference matchup can always spice things up in the College Football world, and with the current playoff format, a signature win against non-conference foe can be a serious resume booster. That being said, conference rivalries are what make this sport great. Not only do they carry the intensity of years and years of battles on the field, but the eventual champions of each of the Power 5 conferences have the best chance of securing a spot in the College Football Playoff.
There are going to be a few conference showdowns over the course of the 2019 season that end up deciding who will compete for a national title, and with the season fast approaching, it is time to take a closer at the most impactful conference matchups on tap this year.
2019 College Football Season Forecast: Top Conference Games of 2019
1. Oklahoma vs. Texas in Dallas (October 12)
With the Longhorns on the upswing, the Red River Shootout suddenly looks like a matchup between top-10 teams with national title hopes. There are Heisman contenders on both sides, and the winner will have the inside track to a spot in the College Football Playoff. As we saw last year, there is a good chance these teams meet again in the Big 12 title game, but the first matchup could alter the trajectory of the 2019 season for both teams.
2. Ohio State at Michigan (November 30)
Michigan has a new offensive system, and Ohio State has a new quarterback and a new head coach. You can make all the changes you want on either side, but at the end of the day, this game is still likely to decide the Big Ten East and serve as the de facto conference title game and a likely play-in game for a spot in the College Football Playoff. National title hopes could be on the line in one of the biggest rivalries in the sport. What more could you ask for?
3. Alabama at Texas A&M (October 12)
The Crimson Tide have carried the banner for the SEC for years, but if there is a coach out there who can attract elite talent on the level of Alabama’s Nick Saban, it is Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher. He won a national title at Florida State, and he has wasted no time bringing in talent and turning the Aggies into a dangerous team. The question whether or not Texas A&M already has the pieces in place to take the next step. The Aggies will have a chance to do just that and take control of the SEC West when they host the Crimson Tide. Saban and company better be ready.
4. Alabama at Auburn (November 30)
On paper, the Crimson Tide should run over an Auburn team that just doesn’t have the offensive firepower to hang with Nick Saban’s bunch. In fact, that is exactly what happened last year when Alabama cruised to a 52-21 win in the Iron Bowl. However, rivalry games are known for producing some surprises, and this time around, the game will be at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Two out of the last three times the Tigers have hosted this matchup, they have upset the top-ranked Crimson Tide. You will want to tune in for this one. It could really throw a wrench in the College Football Playoff race heading into conference title games.
5. Georgia vs. Florida in Jacksonville (November 2)
The Gators finished last season on a high note, clobbering Michigan in the Peach Bowl on their way to a top-10 finish in the final rankings. However, Georgia still dominated the SEC East and beat Florida 36-17. The Bulldogs once again enter the year with national championship aspirations, and if the Gators want to get to that level, they first have to take back their own division. This game could decide the SEC East and have huge implications for the College Football Playoff field.
