2019 College Football Preseason Rankings – Top 5 Quarterbacks: With the 2019 College Football season right around the corner, it is time to start taking a closer look at the top players in the country at each position. No position is more important than quarterback, and a great quarterback can be the backbone of a championship team, and they can also turn an average roster into a surprise contender.
Sometimes, the top college quarterbacks are also the top NFL prospects at the position, but some quarterbacks are just built to thrive at the collegiate level, even if they don’t have all the tools to play at the next level. Looking at the top-five college quarterbacks for 2019, we have a mixture of both.
2019 College Football Preseason Rankings: Top 5 Quarterbacks
1. Trevor Lawrence, Clemson Tigers
Not only did Lawrence lead the Tigers to the national title as a true freshman, but he shredded the Alabama’s defense for 347 yards and three scores in the championship game. Lawrence finished the year with 3,280 yards, 30 touchdowns and only four interceptions, and he completed 65.2 percent of his passes. He has a cannon arm and all the other tools you look for in a quarterback, and if you talk to any executive in the NFL, he would be the No. 1 pick in the draft right now. Lawrence should only get better with more experience, and having him under center basically ensures that Clemson will remain a title threat this season and next.
2. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama Crimson Tide
Tagovailoa piled up ridiculous numbers despite routinely sitting out the fourth quarter of games. He finished with 3,966 yards, 43 touchdowns and just six interceptions, displaying the ability to pick apart defenses with his accuracy from the pocket and extend plays with his legs. He gives Alabama’s offense a quick-strike dimension it hasn’t had during Nick Saban’s tenure, allowing the Crimson Tide to evolve beyond the defensive-minded, power-running team of old. Good luck keeping Tagovailoa and company out of the College Football Playoff.
3. Jake Fromm, Georgia Bulldogs
He didn’t have overwhelming offensive numbers last year, completing 207 of his 307 passes for 2,761 yards, 30 touchdowns and six interceptions. However, Fromm was one of the most effective quarterbacks in the country, ending up in the top 15 nationally in touchdowns, completion percentage, yards per attempt and efficiency rating. The Bulldogs may prefer to pound the ball and play defense, but Fromm is plenty dangerous in his own right. He provides experience and reliability under center, and Fromm will make sure Georgia beats all the teams it is supposed to beat and give them a fighting chance to come out on top in the loaded SEC.
4. Sam Ehlinger, Texas Longhorns
Ehlinger may not have the pro upside of some of the other quarterbacks on this list, but he is definitely one of the most valuable to his team. His passing numbers jumped across the board in his sophomore season, and he tossed 25 touchdowns compared to just five interceptions. He is also a bulldozer in the run game, moving the chains and finishing off drivers, and he added 16 rushing touchdowns. Ehlinger could easily take another step forward with another year of experience and another year in head coach Tom Herman’s system, and you won’t find a gritty leader under center. He could will his team to the Big 12 title and beyond.
5. Justin Herbert, Oregon Ducks
The talent hasn’t necessarily matched the production on the field, but Herbert has all the tools to be a franchise quarterback at the next level. In fact, he’s viewed as a no-doubt, first-round prospect. Injuries and inconsistencies have hampered his college career, but he tossed a career-high 29 touchdowns last season and appears poised for a breakout. The Pac-12 is up for grabs this year, and Herbert is the X-factor that could push the Ducks to the forefront.
