The 5th ranked Oklahoma Sooners come into their Big 12 opener this Saturday looking to enact some sweet revenge on the Cyclones for last season’s huge upset in Norman. Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley has another powerful team on his hands this 2018 season as the Sooners are off to a dominant 2-0 start. Oklahoma is coming off of an impressive 49-21 win at home over UCLA last Saturday that saw the Sooners go on a 49-7 run after falling behind early 7-0.
The Sooners offense has been superb thru it’s first two games as it has scored 112 points so far. The offense rushed for 179 yards on 35 carries and threw for 306 yards on just 35 attempts for an 8.7 yards per pass play last week against UCLA.
On defense, the Sooners gave up 383 total yards last week with most of that number coming against the pass. The Sooners held the UCLA ground game to just 129 yards on 50 carries for a 2.9 yards per rush average. However, the defense did give up some yardage thru the air as UCLA tossed for 254 yards on just 26 passes for a 9.6 yards per throw average.
The Iowa State Cyclones come into their Big 12 opener this week looking for their first win on the 2018 season. The Cyclones lost their opener 13-3 last Saturday at Iowa. Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell had to be disappointed with that effort as the Cyclones have 13 starters back from last year’s 8-5 team that made great strides in turning the Iowa State program around with some big time wins.
The Cyclones jumped out to an early 3-0 1st quarter lead against Iowa but failed to hang up another score the rest of the game. Iowa outgained Iowa State 271 yards to 188 and completely shut down the Cyclones running attack. Iowa State finished with just 19 yards rushing on 25 carries for a paltry 0.8 yards per attempt. The passing game did not do much better as it finished with just 169 yards passing on 31 attempts for a 5.5 yards per attempt average.
We look for this game to turn ugly quick for the Cyclones. The Sooners offense is humming and the Cyclones offense is going to have a hard time trying to match them especially if the defense can’t force turnovers. Iowa State won last year’s game in a shootout 38-31 and we simply don’t see them being able to come anywhere near 38 points this week with the way their offense struggled last week against Iowa. Look for Oklahoma to run up the score and get their revenge for last year’s home upset.
#5 Oklahoma @ Iowa State Free Pick and Score Prediction: Oklahoma to cover as a -17.5 point favorite.
