2018 College Football Picks and Predictions: Week 14 Heisman Trophy Power Rankings: The 2018 College Football season is quickly winding down, and as we prepare for conference title games, it is time to take a loo at how the Heisman Trophy race is playing out. This late in the year, we already have a pecking order among a short list of candidates. There aren’t going to be any new names who suddenly enter the fray, but the frontrunners do have one last chance to either stake their claim to or lose their grip on the most prestigious honor in the sport. Check out my how the I have the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy ranked heading into the final games of the year.
2018 College Football Picks and Predictions: Week 14 Heisman Trophy Power Rankings
1. Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama Crimson Tide
He isn’t the MVP among the Heisman frontrunners, but Tagovailoa is the best player on the best team in the country. He hasn’t had to do much late in games this year, but he helped the Crimson Tide run over rival Auburn in the Iron Bowl, throwing for 324 yards and five touchdowns and adding a rushing score. Tagovailoa now has 36 passing touchdowns to just two interceptions this season to go along with five rushing scores. He will have to absolutely fall on his face in the SEC title game and have another one of the top contenders do something spectacular to lose his grip on the Heisman.
2. Kyler Murray, QB, Oklahoma Sooners
Murray is doing everything he can to make sure the Sooners keep winning despite a horrendous defense. He threw for 364 yards and ran for 114 in a high-scoring shootout victory over West Virginia, boosting his totals to 37 passing scores and 11 rushing scores in the process. Murray will likely finish with more than 4,000 passing yards and more than 1,000 rushing yards for the year, and if he can help Oklahoma avenge its earlier loss to Texas in the Big 12 title game, he will keep himself positioned for the Heisman if Tua Tagovailoa and Alabama happen to lay an egg against Georgia in the SEC Championship.
3. Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State Buckeyes
He gets the award for being the most valuable player to his team among the Heisman favorites, and Haskins has been setting all kinds of Big Ten passing records for an Ohio State team that can’t run the ball and can’t stop anyone on defense. He also had himself a bit of a Heisman moment when he threw for 396 and six touchdowns in a rivalry game against a Michigan defense that was ranked No. 1 in the country against the pass. Haskins is up to 4,081 yards and 42 passing touchdowns, and if he has another monster game against Northwestern in the conference title game, he will keep his Heisman hopes and the Buckeyes’ playoff hopes alive in case others stumble.
4. Will Grier, QB, West Virginia Mountaineers
Grier isn’t going to win the Heisman, but nobody would argue that he deserves a seat at the final table. He kept the Mountaineers in contention in the Big 12 as the engine that drives one of the most potent offenses in the country, and he threw for 539 yards and four touchdowns in a back-and-forth thriller against Oklahoma last time out. Grier is easily going to eclipse 4,000 passing yards and 40 touchdowns when all is said and done, but his chances of jumping to the front of the line went out the window when he was outdueled by Kyler Murray and the Sooners.
