2017 Week 5 College Football Picks – #7 Georgia @ Tennessee Odds & Free Pick 9/30/17

The 7th ranked Georgia Bulldogs come into this game with an unbeaten 4-0 overall record and 3-1 against the spread. The Bulldogs are coming in off of a dominant 31-3 win as a -2.5 point favorite last Saturday at home against Mississippi State.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is getting things done so far in his 2nd year on the job as Bulldogs head coach. The Bulldogs are in great position right now in the SEC East Division and look to be the team to beat in the East. Georgia has already beaten a couple of very good teams with their 20-19 win at Notre Dame on September 9th and their big home win last week against the Bulldogs in a game that many so-called experts were picking Mississippi State to win outright. Not us.

The Bulldogs have been solid on offense thru four games but it’s their defense that is the standout unit on the team. The Bulldogs defense shutdown an explosive Mississippi State offense and held them to just 3 points and 280 total yards last week. They have now given up just 10 points and 284 yards to Appalachian State, 19 points and 265 yards to Notre Dame, 14 points and 249 yards to Samford and the 3 points and 280 yards to Miss State. Georgia is clearly one of the top 5 defenses talent-wise and stats-wise in the entire nation.

The Tennessee Volunteers come into this SEC showdown with an overall record of 3-1 and 1-3 against the spread. Tennessee struggled last week in a 17-13 home win against UMass in which they were -27.5 point favorites.

The Volunteers look to even up their SEC record this week as they are 0-1 after losing 26-20 on last play hail mary to the Florida Gators in the Swamp. The Volunteers, along with the Gators and Bulldogs, are projected to be one of the top 3 teams battling it out this year to win the SEC East Division so this game on Saturday is a must win game for all intents and purposes. Tennessee can’t afford to go 0-2 in the head-to-head series against the Gators and Bulldogs if they want to realistically win the SEC East.

The Volunteers defense has been the best unit on their team thru it’s first four weeks and especially the last three weeks after getting lit up by Georgia Tech for 41 points and 655 total yards in it’s 42-41 opening win against the Yellow Jackets. Tennessee’s defense has only allowed 7 points and 215 yards to Indiana State, 26 points and 380 yards to Florida and 281 yards and 13 points to UMass the last three weeks.

Tennessee has won the last two meetings between these two rivals with a 34-31 win last year at Athens and a 38-31 win in Knoxville in 2015. The Volunteers have plenty of confidence they can beat Georgia but the Bulldogs are coming in with a dominant defensive unit and revenge on their minds. The last six meetings between these two teams have been decided by 8 points or less so close games are the norm in this rivalry.
