2017 Week 4 College Football Picks – Michigan @ Purdue Odds & Free Pick 9/23/17
The Michigan Wolverines enter this game with a 3-0 overall record after beating Air Force 29-13 at home last week in the Big House as a -23 point favorite. The Wolverines are now just 1-2 against the spread this season.
Michigan has been very stout on defense this 2017 season and that’s not a surprise despite returning only 1 starter from last season. Michigan has an excellent defensive system under head coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Don Brown and they look like they will once again have a top 10 nationally ranked defense this season after finishing 2nd in the country last year. Michigan has only allowed 192 total yards to Florida, 200 yards to Cincinnati and 232 yards to Air Force in it’s first three games.
On offense, Michigan has been steady so far but far from great. The Wolverines have totaled 433 yards against Florida, 414 yards against Cincinnati and 359 against Air Force in it’s first three games this season. Junior quarterback Wilton Speight has been okay so far throwing for 571 yards and 3 touchdowns against 2 interceptions. However, his completion percentage of just 54.5 percent needs to improve if Michigan wants any chance of winning the Big Ten and reaching the College Football Playoff this season.
The Purdue Boilermakers are 2-1 overall this season after winning 35-3 last week at Missouri as a +5.5 point underdog. The Boilermakers have been a bettors’ best friend this season so far as they are now 3-0 against the spread.
The Boilermakers fans and alumni wanted and expected explosive offensive play when they hired new head coach Jeff Brohm and so far he has surpassed the early expectations. Brohm and co-offensive coordinators Brian Brohm and Tony Levine have implemented an offensive system that has the Boilermakers averaging 35.7 points per game this season. The offense has been well balanced and has run for over 205 yards and passed for more than 272 yards in their last two games.
Defensively, the Boilermakers have been much better than advertised. The unit was awful last season finishing 117th in total defense but has done a very good job thru three games this season. Purdue only gave up 35 points to Louisville in it’s opener, 21 points to Ohio in week and just 3 points last week at Missouri. If the unit keeps up that quality of defensive play this season then the Boilermakers have a great shot at going to a bowl game this season after finishing just 3-9 last year.
Michigan is 8-2 in the last 10 games against Purdue and 7-3 against the spread. However, these two teams have not played each other since 2012. So who do we like Saturday? We are betting on Michigan to control the game and cover the spread as -10 point favorites. Bet on Michigan -10 at Bovada Sportsbook.
