2017 College Football Power Rankings – Top 3 Head Coaches, Nick Saban Heads the List
1. Nick Saban, Head Coach at University of Alabama – Is there anyone alive who doesn’t consider Saban to be the best in the college game? Saban took over as Alabama head coach in 2007 and has gone on to win 4 National Championships(2009, 2011, 2012, 2015) and compile an overall record of 114-19. Saban is a master at game planning, in-game adjustments, preparation and recruiting. The guy is a machine and has proven himself at Michigan State, LSU and now Alabama. He has won 5 National Titles in his college career as he also won a title at LSU in 2003. Saban is the Bill Belichick of the college game and is actually great friends with Belichick after coaching under him as defensive assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns from 1991 thru 1994. At 65 years of age, Saban appears to show no signs of slowing down anytime soon and that’s bad news for the rest of the SEC and College Football.
2. Urban Meyer, Head Coach at Ohio State University – Urban Meyer is a great head coach who has proven it at four different schools. Meyer has a career overall college coaching record at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State of 165-29 including a record of 61-6 at Ohio State. Meyer has won three National Championships as he won two titles at Florida(2006, 2008) and one so far at Ohio State(2014). Remarkably, Meyer is only 53 years old and could go on to set all-time coaching records in the college game if his health remains good and he doesn’t choose to try his luck in the NFL. Meyer, along with Saban and Pop Warner, are the only three head coaches in the sport to win National Championships at two different schools.
3. Chris Petersen, Head Coach at University of Washington – Saban and Meyer were the easy choices for top 2 head coaches but the 3rd spot was difficult. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and Michigan head coach John Harbaugh were tough omissions as we ultimately chose Chris Petersen. Why, you ask? Well, Peterson has a career overall record of 119-26 at two schools that are not the easiest to recruit and win at in Boise State and Washington. Petersen beat a lot of more talented teams while elevating Boise State to new heights and is coming off of a great season that saw him take Washington to the College Football Playoff. Petersen is a great head coach and he is still only 52 years old. The only question is can he win a National Championship at Washington or will he eventually leave for a better job where recruiting is easier to complete that task? Make no mistake, he will win a National Championship or two if he ever gets a job like Florida, Ohio State, Florida State, Texas, USC, Oklahoma or another heavyweight. No doubt in our mind.
