2015 Free College Football Picks: Week 5 Expert Picks Against the Spread: A busy Week 5 in college football is set fast approaching, and this weekend’s slate features five games between ranked opponents, including three involving teams from the SEC and a big showdown between Notre Dame and Clemson that will put one team in great positon to make a run at a spot in the College Football Playoff. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the big matchups for Week 5 and give out some top free college football picks against the spread.
2015 Free College Football Picks: Week 5 Expert Picks Against the Spread
No. 23 West Virginia Mountaineers at No. 15 Oklahoma Sooners
If you like points, you will definitely want to turn into this one. Led by quarterback Baker Mayfield the 3-0 Sooners are averaging 41.0 points per game. The Mountaineers are led by quarterback Skyler Howard and are averaging 43.0 points per game. Oklahoma boasts the best win of the bunch with a road win over Tennessee, and West Virginia has yet to be challenged with a schedule that has featured Georgia Southern, Liberty and a horrible Maryland team this far. Last year, the Sooners pulled away from the Mountaineers in a high-scoring affair, and while West Virginia’s defense should be improved, they are haven’t come far enough to take down Oklahoma in Norman.
Prediction: Oklahoma Sooners (-7) Cover the Spread
No. 13 Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 8 Georgia Bulldogs
Everyone is ready to pronounce the Alabama dynasty dead after a loss to Ole Miss, but people were saying the same thing last year after the Crimson Tide lost to the Rebels, and Nick Saban’s bunch promptly ran the table to reach the College Football Playoff. Granted, Alabama is searching for a QB, but the same thing can be said about Georgia. The Crimson Tide are going to lean on the Derrick Henry and the ground game, and the Bulldogs are going to do the same with Nick Chubb. This game figures to be a war in the trenches, and I will take my chances with Alabama’s talent-laden offensive and defensive fronts.
Prediction: Alabama Crimson Tide (+1.5) Cover the Spread
No. 3 Ole Miss Rebels at No. 25 Florida Gators
Both teams enter the matchup with 4-0 records, but these two SEC rivals are not exactly on equal playing fields. Granted, the Gators’ offense is showing more signs of life than in recent years, but a 14-9 road win over Kentucky and a 28-27 home win over an underachieving Tennessee teams pale in comparison to the Rebels’ road win over Alabama. Ole Miss has far more firepower on offense, and a defense led by Robert Nkemdiche is going to be too much for a mediocre Florida offense to handle. Even with home-field advantage on their side, the Gators are going to be in trouble.
Prediction: Ole Miss Rebels (-7.5) Cover the Spread
No. 21 Mississippi State Bulldogs at No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies
The Aggies are undefeated, favored and playing at home, but the Bulldogs are more than capable of making this one close. After all, Texas A&M’s wins against Arizona State and Arkansas don’t look all that impressive anymore, especially a close win over the underachieving Razorbacks. Meanwhile, Mississippi State came with in a mixed field goal of knocking of LSU. The Bulldogs also have the best playmaker on the field in quarterback Dak Prescottt, and their defense has been much better than expected after some offseason departures. Prescott ay company crushed the Aggies last year, and while the Aggies have improved since then, I still expect the Bulldogs to give them all they can handle
Prediction: Mississippi State Bulldogs (+7) Cover the Spread
No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 12 Clemson Tigers
Missing their starting quarterback and starting running and heading into one of the toughest places to play in the country are far from ideal scenarios for the Fighting Irish, but don’t count out Notre Dame. After all, they are battle tested with wins over Texas and Georgia Tech while Clemson barely held on against Louisville in its only tough game to date. Perhaps more importantly, the Tigers have had a horrible track record in winning big games. Last year, Clemson lost all three of its game against ranked opponents, giving away a game against a Florida State team missing Jameis Winston. Two years ago, they went 2-2 against ranked opponents and were slaughtered by the Seminoles at home. This is a game Clemson should be able to win, but it is exactly the type of statement game the Tigers seems to find a way to lose.
Prediction: Notre Dame Fighting Irish (+2) Cover the Spread
